Am I petty to think of unfriending over this post?

I guess I don't really get it? Is your friend saying it's cheesy? (?)

While I agree that it has become tiresome dealing with the utter lack of intelligence and compassion by republicans I would probably just ignore the stupid post. I'm trying to deal with my republican friends and colleagues the same way I deal with the mentally ill: treat them with compassion sand remember that they are simply not equipped to behave nicely like the rest of us given their limitations.

Not OP, but I think I found the item that OP's classmate is referencing.

http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2012/10/12/Food-Tent-Displaying-Obama-Campaign-Signs-Erected-Outside-Ohio-Poll

I am hoping OP will explain the "cheese" reference. Is that what has you upset? Or is it what this article is saying about the early voting in OH?

I am all for unfriending the following types of people on FB:
- people you don't know, but somehow you ended up as "FB friends"
- people you don't like
- people you have no contact with either on or off FB

If this person is any of those, then unfriend her and be prepared to say why. But I don't think 1 weird post is a valid reason.

Yes, I absolutley would in this case because it has racial overtones. Typically I just hide people that I disagree but this type of comment crosses a line for me.

Could you explain this to me? I do not get the whole "cheese" thing. How is it racist? TIA

I'm a Republican but most of my HS friends are Dems. Family is still very much Republican, as are most of my work friends and colleagues. I don't post on FB or have conversations with anyone about my political views, and I don't like it when others use FB as a platform from which to shout their viewpoints, especially when it involves intolerance or a superiority / smug POV. By anyone, regardless of party.

When friends on FB do this kind of thing, it does make me question their intellect. I'd like to say I see it equally coming from both party lines, but sadly it's not.

Free cheese = food stamps/ welfare line.

I was wondering the same thing . . .whether I should unfriend a cousin after he posted a pro-gun post referencing the Denver Batman movie theater shootings the morning after the shooting. He normally posts pro-gun stuff but that particular post was so offensive. I did unfriend him.

I don't think they do it anymore, but one way that the USDA used to subsidize agriculture was by purchasing large quantities of cheese that they then gave away to low income people and organizations that served them.

There was a lot of stigma associated with accepting "government cheese".

This. People often joke about how Blacks love their government cheese.

I think it's helpful to see what people on the other side are thinking but it's up to you.

Yes, I believe it was in the Carter administration when they started giving away excess cheese and where this comment comes from. But whichever president it was under, it was a long time ago. The person who made this comment is definitely dating themselves. (not that it matters one way or another)

Wow, I have never heard the reference to "free cheese" before. I am 39, so I guess I am too young to remember the Carter references. But I would think I would still have heard it one way or another since then. But yeah, I really was clueless about it. I am the one who wondered if OP's friend was suggesting it was cheesy! LOL!

I'm going to take a moment to brag- the craziest thing I have seen on my facebook feed lately was a comment along the lines of "Oh that Joe Biden! He is just so rude!" I'm a staunch liberal but I have to say that didn't really bother me. There's not much political stuff on my feed at all (my friends are SANE! whoopie!).

I am 43 and do remember the Carter years clearly but am clueless about the "free cheese" thing.
