How is leaving the word God out of a party platform alienating people? Honestly, they should have just left it out instead of forcing it back in. THIS is a religious litmus test forced on parties.

Guess what? The first amendment gives you what you want - the freedom to practice religion as you choose. If we all remember our history, part of the reason people set sail for the new world was freedom to practice religions the state didn't allow.

The party platform is about what government policies the party endorses. Separation of Church and State? Not ringing a bell? God doesn't actually belong in there because God has nothing to do with how the government functions.

Umm, wrong PP - Obama was talking engagement in 2008 and Hillary slammed him for it. And btw Romney talks a lot tougher, but I guarantee you that in office he will pursue effectively the same policy toward Tehran as Obama has. Forgive the hijack here. Back to the usual programming. I thought that platform discussion was an embarassment to all of us. I can see why they wanted to add the language (even if I don't agree with the substance, it's good politics.) But once you're in a situation where the process has gone awry (e.g., nothing close to 2/3 support in a voice vote), don't try to deny reality on national TV. Really really badly handled.

Hope you're right. I would have thought that Saddam also presented a lousy problem with no clear or easy way to resolve it and Bush went ahead and invaded anyway - even though there were no WMD and no convincing evidence that there might be. But I pray you're right, pp!

Where do you see anyone getting up on stage and saying anything about the non-existence of god? All we are asking is that irrelevant issues not be brought in. There is no moral equivalence between the guy banging on your head and you asking him to stop banging.
