Really? While it is indeed one of my DCs solid admit schools, she would never consider Davidson or W&L. And certainly not consider them better than Colgate. |
| Colgate is much better than Davidson, W&L, Macalester, and Smith. Equivalent or slightly better then Bates and Colby. |
| It was listed on CNN money today as top ten schools with highest paid graduates. |
I saw that. Very good school. But I was still surprised to see them on that list. |
| Alumni network in NYC is fantastic. |
|
Davison #9 W&L #14 Colgate #20
But rankings don't reflect the best fit for your DC |
| Depends where they want to live after school. Colgate has a much better reputation and name recognition in the northeast than W&L. W&L has such a southern, preppy vibe so they're very different. |
Alumna here. Wasnt surprised because there were tons of grads who joined their parents' businesses after graduation. Money begets money thing. And there is a lot of $$$ at 'Gate. |
True, but the economy in the Northeast is not exactly churning out jobs for college grads (apart from top tier business schools). W&L has a better reputation here and throughout the south (where jobs are being created). |
| Colgate is very aggressive in seeking applicants from this area. |
Why and why do you say that? |

Colgate is a truly wonderful school. As an alum, I could go on and on about what I loved about that place.
The down side is definitely the weather. It really is freezing. However, this really does facilitate getting to know the rest of the people at the school. When you don't feel like walking a mile or two in the snow to go out, you will find lots of people hanging out in the dorm. It might be one of the most beautiful campuses in the world. It is what college should look like. I knew when I drove up to it that it was the place I had to be. Professors are great. Invite you to their homes and you get a chance to really carve out a great experience for yourself. You never walk around and not know someone because the school is fairly small. There is a sense of comfort and safety there and I think it's great for kids leaving home for the first time. Town of Hamilton has improved but it used to be terrible. There is nothing to do. However, this once again just forces you to get to know the other students. There are so many extracurricular activities and it's small enough that it just isn't intimidating. Hamilton College is in Clinton, NY which is about 30 minutes away. I think most people assume Hamilton is nearby. Probably would have made things a little more interesting if another college had been closer. There is a definitely sense of family among Colgate Alumni. There is no issue reaching out to alumni if you need anything and I think this might be one of the biggest advantages of going to a school where everyone knows everyone. |

I don't think Colgate is a solid safety school for those not getting into W&L or Davidson. It's quite competitive.
|
Agree. It's also just as good as either. |
| If your DC was admitted to Colgate, did DC end up going there? If not, why not. Also, where did DC end up? |
