If it flew away it's probably dead of natural causes by now. 4 years later.

Op, any update?

Bird was dead this morning. Felt terrible, but not sure what we could have done actually. Not sure anyone would have come if I called last night.

I'm so glad you left him alone instead of stressing him during his last hours. Thank you for the update.

What you could have done is bring the bird in out of the cold, put him in a box with holes in it, put some water in a bottlecap, and put the box in a dark, quiet place. There are wildlife people on call 24-7, you just have to look for them.

I admit I've had a little bit of vodka, but this thread is cracking me up. Between the saving its energy for a long flight comment and the concern about a bird 4 years dead, I'm cracking up. Dcum, you complete me.

Sure. It's the strangest thing. So the bird, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon’s that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted—nevermore!
