I feel bad, but I really want to get rid of our cats

If you all hate your poor cats so much, just take them to a kill shelter and be done with it.

Wow, that is such a smart idea! Because I am sure the cats would prefer that to living with someone who feeds them, takes care of them and cleans up after them if they knew that the person wasn't enjoying their companionship.

Re: the poster who said she hasn't seen dog hate--there is plenty of animal resentment to go around on DCUM. I have read plenty.

Re: the hairballs--if you are complaining about hairballs are you trying to do anything about them? You should be giving Petromalt, Laxastat or similar once a week to make them pass like poop. This will go a long way toward curbing the vomiting.

Finally, all of you complaining about behavioral problems. Cats are not stupid. They can sense how you feel. If you are mad about having them still around, ignore them constantly because of kids, yes, they will let you know they are not happy. Would you want to live somewhere you're not appreciated?

LOL. My cat has got to be the dumbest creature on the planet. I'm utterly sick of him and my DH detests him. Now I have to take him to the vet for a disgusting growth on his back. I'm really hoping it's cancer so I have an excuse to have him out down.

I suddenly feel very lucky that my cat's only quirk is an occasional biting bender. In 4 years i think shes puked four times and never misses the litter box no matterhow full it is. Ihavethe box under my parrot cageand it sitsona little rug which is easy to vacuum every few days. Good luck OP and PPs.

I have a cat - sometimes he knocks things over, he often gets into trash and such. But when I adopted him I was making a commitment to care for him his whole life. Your cat should not be puking that frequently - what kind of lowgrade food are you feeding him?

What kind of example are you setting for your kids? That animals are disposable?

I agree. I guess these posts are a vent but my god this thread is depressing. I had to put my cat of 16 years to sleep about 2 months ago. She could be a real pain in the ass for many different reasons. But you know what, I can be a real pain in the ass, my kids can be a real pain in the ass, my husband can be a real pain in the ass. I loved that cat and when I adopted her I made a commitment to her to take care of her and love her. And I did, even when it was not at all convenient. If you dump your cats because they are no longer convenient, I really do not know how you can live with yourself.

NP here. Hello, these are vents! These people are just complaining, but no one is running out to the shelter to dump their animals! Sheesh!

Before you get all pissy, consider the fact that there are so many homeless animals and so many animals at the shelter. I think most are dumped because of the very inconveniences and annoyance that these posters are writing about. You are deluding yourself if you think that none of the people on this thread are going to one day dump their cats. It happens every day. To say no one is running out to the shelter to dump their cats is so naive. Most of the cats in the shelter have had that very thing happen. And as I mentioned in my post above, if you do that to an animal that was a part of your family, I do not know how you sleep at night/live with yourself.

Well said. You are right. I also find this thread depressing.

Yes, this was a vent. I wasn't saying I was running off to the shelter to give them back.

Unfortunately we can't change the food. They're both prone to crystals in their urine, so they eat prescription cat food. That food doesn't seem to make them puke more than other food. As far as I understand, some cats just puke more than others.

We can't put the litter box in the basement, because we don't have one. We live in an apartment -- which also means no access to a back yard.

I'm not exaggerating when I say I spend hours a week. It's about 20 to 30 minutes a day (not always all at once).

The cat I had before these two was so low-maintenance. I barely had to do anything. He did not puke everywhere, track litter everywhere, shed everywhere. He didn't destroy anything. He didn't dig dirt out of our plants or knock over the garbage can or walk all over the kitchen counters (ew!) or any of the crazy things my current cats do. If I had two cats like my previous cat, it would be a piece of cake.

Again, I'm just venting here. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets as frustrated as I do!

Why don't you get a big cat cage with multi-levels? All these cat posts about behavior are really disgusting. http://www.amazon.com/Midwest-Homes-Pets-inches-Playpen/dp/B000I1M76Q

Spoken like someone with no kids.

Sorry to disappoint: I have 2 children. I just understand what it means to make a commitment to another living being. For better or worse.

I'm a PP who wrote about my cat with many quirks but I too am depressed by this thread. I do not dream of putting him down, that's a sad thought.

What about cat Valium?

We had a dog like that. I thought I'd die from a stroke b/c he was so hyper.

Anonymous wrote:we adopted these two cats as kittens about eight years ago. they've never outgrown their kitten phase. they're very energetic and mischievous. they have their annoying habits, as any pets do. one of them likes to scratch up our arm chair. one of them howls if we shut him out of our bedroom. (sometimes you just don't want a cat in your bedroom, you know?) We have child locks on our cabinets and doors not for our kids, but for our cats, who can open both and pull stuff out. when they puke (as cats do), it's always in the worst places -- on our couch and the area rugs, where it is the hardest to clean. (why can't they go for the hardwood or tile floors?) they track litter everywhere. and no amount of brushing their fur prevents huge amounts of fur coating everything we own.

I know this is normal cat behavior. and it's not the cats' fault. but I am sick of it. I spent hours per week cleaning up after the cats -- between the fur, litter box, litter all over the house and puke. I've really begun to resent them. I'd rather spend quality time with my kids than use up any free time cleaning up after the cats. when I get home from a long day of work, the last thing I want to do is clean a big gooey hairball off the couch.

in my dreams some nice family comes along and takes the cats away.

thanks for letting me vent.

This thread is hilarious.

Google the song "Did You See What the Cat Threw Up" by Baron Von Rumplebuss (a kids song, name might be spelled wrong).

It will give you something to hum when dealing with your pita cats.

The rights and wrongs of this issue are sometimes complicated. My cat shits and pisses throughout my house. Yes, we have taken her to the vet multiple times. Yes, we have hired an animal behaviorist. Yes, we have tried medication. Nothing has helped. There is not anything that has been determined to be physically wrong with her. Right now, the cat is living in our unfinished basement, which has no windows, because we can't let her up into the house. I feel terrible about this, and am sure that she is unhappy. But I can't and won't ask my 2 year old son to live in a house where an animal is pissing and shitting all over the place.
