I'm an Orthodox Jew. Ask me anything.

I didnt when I was younger and my kids are small so they dont know better. Growing up through college, I only ate kosher certified products or at kosher certified restaurants. It meant I couldnt or didnt go out to eat with non-kosher keeping friends (jewish and not jewish) but it didnt bother me. I even waitressed at a non-kosher restaurant. After college, I began eating some vegetarian food at non-certified restaurants and it has become increasingly difficult to stop. It was much easier when it was a blanket rule but now I find myself saying, "its only a salad" or "its just grilled salmon" and I'd like to be stricter about it. There are just fewer kosher restaurant options around here than where I grew up and its hard to remember to pack lunch every day or to cook every night. We dont take our kids to non-certified kosher restaurants, even though they eat vegetarian (non-certified) foods in their secular school.

I'm the only non-jew in a group of jewish moms. They're all very nice, but sometimes I feel they wish I wasn't around, so they could talk jewish things all the time. I get the impression they have to be circumspect around me, out of niceness. Am I just paranoid?!

You are paranoid. There aren't so many "Jewish" things to talk about.

Do you have all of your lights on timers so that you don't do any work on the Sabbath? Why do I see Men and Women who walk to Sabbath services walking on different sides of the street? Men on one side, women on the other?

What's with the dark purple clothes on little girls? I've seen large groups of orthodox jewish people visiting tourist attractions, and all the little girls seem to be wearing black plus some shade of dark purple.

And do you pre-tear your toilet paper to avoid "working" on the Sabbath?

Only on the mother's side. i.e. if its your mother or your mother's mother. I dont believe people with only a Jewish father are Jewish.

Did you get your mitochondrial DNA checked to see if you indeed have a maternal Jewish line? If you did check it and it said that you maternal line was say Polish (non Jewish) as for many Jews from Europe (not assuming that you are of European lineage), would you then consider yourself to be less Jewish?

We have some lights on timers but mostly we just leave them on or off. Men and women do not walk on opposite sides of the street in my neighborhood, but perhaps they might in an ultra-orthodox community, mostly to avoid socializing between the sexes.

Do you have TV in your home?

What do you and your husband do?

Do you, or would you ever use hormonal birth control (I understand that this is OK but barrier methods are not)?
