Janney waitlist....

Why would they give up 8k when they already planned to have a child in that seat? Text books bought, class size set, teachers hired, etc.

Now I do believe that the Principal would tell parents that no OOB students at all because as we know.....the Janney parents can get a little unhinged at times.

This.

DCPS had a one time enrollment increase (in the past forty years) last year. What do you know? It was a fluke, generally attributed to the addition of new PS/PK classrooms. But, this year, enrollment fell again. Meanwhile, charter enrollment is now up to >40% of the public school population. That's not surprising, as charters continue their history of outperforming DCPS in the District.

It does seem possible that the JKLM schools would continue to experience over-crowding, but even they are beginning to lose students from their most educated families to the "high-concept" charter schools. That's a good thing though, because it opens up an escape hatch for students from the lousy and not-improving DCPS schools from East of the Park.

Janney parents do NOT want to hear this though. Being underwater by $100K or so is not really a big deal if you weren't planning to move and can afford the payments, but the last thing you want is for there to be even the perception that OOB students might be attending. By the way, "OOB" is widely perceived to be minority, poor, and low-performing, but since no-one is willing to connect those dots that openly, the preferred shorthand is "OOB" and the assumptions are allowed to stand. Bonus: we get to call ourselves "progressive" because we're "supporting" "public education."

WTF? Janney has OOB kids right now and Janney parents are not up in arms about that. Really, the school is just renovated and the conservative projections for next year are close to 600 students in a school designed for 500. Janney's enrollment increases are not due solely to pre-K and it does not have preschool. Enrollment is increasing because families are moving into the neighborhood because of the limited good options at DCPS and there is no sign of this stopping. My personal view is that OOB kids come from families that care about education and make the effort to get their children into a good school and that is what I am looking for in classmates for my children.

I'm sorry. Please tell me how I am not supporting public education? Do I have to want an overcrowded school to be a progressive? HelP me understand.

I also can't imagine that anyone in AU Park is 100K underwater, if that's what you meant. (It's not clear.)

your post is incorrect.

1) DCPS enrollment may be down but Janney's enrollment is up 25% over the past 2 years (2010-2012). It's test scores have continually out performed ANY of the charters.
2) Only a handful of neighborhood kids attend charters. Janney is not losing kids to the charters except for maybe 5 kids to Yu Ying (because of the Mandarin, not general quality) 94% of the neighborhood kids attend Janney. The remaining 6% is almost entirely private. 95% of Janney kids will go on to deal. There is no longer any 3rd or 5th grade exodus.
3) I doubt anyone in AU park is underwater. Prices are back to their pre-2008 levels and are rising 5% each year. Most people are sitting on $300-400K of equity (because they bought pre 2003).
4) The OOB kids at Janney are (to a person) from involved families that just happen to reside outside of AU Park. The white/black achievement gap at Janney is closing rapidly over the past 2 years and is the best in the city. And quite of the few black families live within AU Park.

in general I agree with you - but where did you get the 94%. I know of a few kids on our block who attend private schools and charter schools.

Given that there are almost 600 kids at Janney, the 94% leaves room for a few kids to attend other schools.

Anyone heard of any movement here?

Janney has just started admitting from the waiting list. I know of a family in the top 5 that was admitted in the last 2 weeks.

Is the movement on the in-boundary pre-K waitlist or another grade?

I expect the pre-K waitlist to move quite a bit. If it is other grades I am surprised.

In-boundary Pre-K, I should have specified.

we put down deposits at our current preschool and at one other which had a good PK program. I was very open with these two preschool directors about how Janney was our first choice. I kept in close contact with them and both refunded my deposit when we eventually got into Janney PK (in late June).

First question -- does your child need full time care? If yes, is the current care place one that he can continue in for another year? Can you keep that option open without forfeiting a large deposit, etc?

next options to consider, other public schools. you can apply to DCPS Out of boundary, and charter schools.
