Do you regret living in a large house?

Depends. Part of being green is being reasonable about consumption. Having more than you need is not really green. Heating/cooling rooms no one is in, or even whole floors full of big rooms, isn't green even in a relatively efficient home.

thank you Green Police. there is plenty of oil, thanks.

If you moved farther out, with a longer commute, you're probably regretting that more than anything else. We moved into a slightly bigger house with our last move, and I can honestly say that I will downsize when my daughter goes to college because I won't want the maintenance of a 4-bedroom house with yard when it's just me rattling around in it.)

What is considered "large" in this area (or in general)?

Being green is stupid unless it saves you money

New house is gorgeous so why can't I jst be happy. Instead I feel guilty and overwhelmed. We are getting an excellent deal on the house, so that helps, but I cant see ever getting used to living in sch a huge home.

Maybe because it's not really "you"? Are you feeling pressured at all by your DH? I remember reading Eat, Pray, Love, when she's sitting in the big house she's suppose to want. You options are to find a way to embrace it, or change your situation. I don't mean to be flip, because I get it. GL!

When Al Gore starts living this way, I'll take it under consideration.

Biggest impact on carbon footprint is number of kids.
OP has 1. She will be fine.

Yes. I wanted to back out of our contract, but my ex didn't want to lose the 35K deposit.

4 years afterwards, we short sale the house and lose ALL our deposited money.

SO NOT WORTH IT!

I LOVE living in a large house. i forget the exact square feet, but it is 4 stories with a huge yard in back, 2 car garage, right in Falls Church. It is just me, my husband, my toddler, baby on the way and large dog, so we definitely don't "need" this much house BUT we use it all and I love it - NO clutter. We have a large kitchen, dining room, a nice spacious living room, a play area all on the first floor, then each kid gets his own room (I am not opposed to sharing though), my husband and I each have our own office, we have a room just for storage, a guest bedroom, etc. It definitely costs a lot of maintain, furnish, decorate, so I can see it not being for everyone, but we are home a lot and it is worth it to us.

DH and I have worked various jobs along the Dulles corridor for the last 12 years and have never once had to take a job inside the beltway. Our commutes have ranged from 10min-30 min. All I see out here is more and more businesses coming and can't see why we would ever commute. Its great because housing is more affordable and the jobs pay well. Our quality if life land housing options leaves nothing more to be desired.
.

Live in burbs in 3500 sq ft home, commute. 5 mins to work

Yeah, right.

Now, now. PP is right. There is "plenty of oil". It's just going to take more energy to dig it out of the ground than it will yield. Hooray!
