Because I was asked to comment from a prior thread - http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/30/447190.page - here goes:
Sounds like other people on the thread are having no trouble with RM and getting a quality education - which is no surprise given that RM is one of the top public high schools in the country. You can take advantage of the quality education and view this as a learning opportunity for your children to learn compassion and empathy for the "rougher" element - getting a lesson in learning how to deal with and ignore or help other children that have issues. This will help them thrive later in life when they have to deal with people they don't want to deal with. A well-developed sense of empathy and compassion is a better predictor of happiness and success later in life than academic achievement anyway. Just sayin'. |
Interestingly, 54 MOB is in Churchill, not RM. The shooting related to the student in RM was not gang related. The shooter just happened to be in a "gang". I googled mcps and gang activities and this is what I found: http://www6.montgomerycountymd.gov/content/council/pdf/agenda/cm/2010/101021/20101021_HHSPS1.pdf http://digitalcommons.wcl.american.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1033&context=clb Both articles talk about Churchill. Nothing about RM. |

I'd pick WJ over RM any day. Any of the W cluster schools would be better. You should try Poolesville or Damascus-good schools filled with average white kids. No real gang violence.
|
Well, if you are looking to avoid gangs, I would avoid Churchill. LOL! |
Which high schools in the county have "real gang violence" at the high school? And even Poolesville and Damascus aren't "filled" with average white kids anymore. Poolesville is 44% non-white, and Damascus is 36% non-white. Even Whitman is 30% non-white. If you want an all-white high school, you'll have to move out of the county. |

During the housing boom there were several families that I know that moved to Frederick.
I'm sure that part of the reason was to get more house for the money but I also suspect that they weren't crazy about the changing demograhics in the area. I don't know the details but think that I overheard the recent shooting in Frederick had to do with gang members. So while some areas are going to be better than others, it's going to be hard to totally shield your kids from this kind of thing. And even if you are able to find an area that has no gangs, there are still things that go on amongst peers. Like bullying and think that is as just as big of a factor for a safe environment. |
| OP's child has probably graduated already! |

Homeschool!
It's a changing world! Schools are not the same like when we were in there. |
When I was in HS, there were Crips/Bloods in my school. My kids won't have any of these kinds of gangs in their HS. Yep, it's a changing world. |
Sure, nothing prepares a kid for the challenges of a changing world like homeschooling. |
Yes! For example, schools no longer view brastrap-snapping and butt-slapping (of girls) as examples of boys being boys. That is change indeed. |
| One of the after school clubs at Churchill is MS-13. So there's that. |
Um the gang kids were black, not white. They do have black people in Frederick you know. |
Yeah but the point is to those people saying how you have to move out of the county to avoid these types of issues is that you really can't avoid it. |
|
Wait, how is there a MS-13 club at Churchill. Is this a joke?
There are Hispanics at CHS?? |
