Is Richard Montgomery HS and Rockville the best choice for our family?

I totally missed that too. The RM basher..

PP is correct. Our kids are tracked in late elementary / middle school so they can take AP classes in HS. Suggest you hire tutors for your kids and consider summer classes to get them where they need to be so they can take AP. Without that, the peer group will be what your DC reports, sadly. Or maybe move North to Frederick County or East to Howard County.

Who is the RM basher? You think there is only one parent among the thousand that don't like RM. Give me a break. Your school is hopped up on IB students but it's core is Twinbrook, Lincoln Park, and other trash.

Only one that uses the word trash consistently.

And obsesses about the evil influence of Twinbrook and Lincoln Park.

Every single school in MCPS is like that. High achieving kids take AP or IB classes and pretty much only serious kids are there. Good kids take the honors classes. The disruptive elements take the regular class and so every single school gets segregated.

In the end, what it means is that you can get a quality education in any MCPS school if your kid is taking AP/IB or Honors. There may be sex, drugs, gang activities etc among other kids, but these kids are not really interacting with the studious kids and are very much segregated.

Yes but when you go to a school where more kids are serious or like you, it is a healthier environment. I don't know anyone who wants to go to a school with gangs, dropouts, foul-mouth a$$holes that tell off the teacher. I am all for a racially diverse school but I certainly don't want my child going to school with poor and illegal kids. Sorry.

Lets be very clear - there are two types of kids involved in drugs in MCPS. The "non-W" drug dealer and the "w" drug user. Simple economics of supply and demand.

lol there are drug dealers at W schools as well. And their stuff used to be pretty quality stuff compared to most of the others.

Some people keep posting that there are gangs in RM. Is there any proof of this?
Anonymous
There are gangs or former gang members in the area. I guess it's possible that they'd trickle down into the schools.

But supposedly there's the 54 gang over at Churchill as well.

Guess it depends on what a definition of a gang is. ie a bunch of people who hang out together, deciding to give themselves a name for their group and making up tags that represent their group. Or as part of or associated with one of those larger nationwide organizations that are more commonly known.

As another poster mentioned, to my knowledge I don't think the schools in MCPS have the same type of gang problems like those in the inner cities.

But I don't doubt that there is a criminal element lurking in most of the schools in the area, some of which are associated with the national networks.

If I were you, I would move to WJ area. I would also work with my kids to "lift" them up to Honor classes as people suggested.
I have several friends from RM cluster, and kids not from IB reported exactly the same experience like your child.
If your child is not happy, why should you keep him in the same school?
Moving between schools within MCSP should not be big deal. If he has good friends, he can still see them. WJ is not far from RM, and friends do not necessarily take the same classes.

Here's a link of a 2007 Gazette article about the 54 MOB "gang" in Potomac:

http://ww2.gazette.net/stories/011707/potonew212905_31981.shtml

There are probably more serious elements out there as well, and there might be an effort in downplaying some changes that is going on in Montgomery County.

This article about the shooting at the Rockville Metro station mentions that both students at RM are gang members:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/crime/police-say-teens-plotted-rockville-metro-station-shooting/2012/05/21/gIQAcAiRgU_story.html

So guess that's proof that there are gang members in RM.
