The shots do work on some people, but not people with the worst allergies (who will still always get the chest wheeze mentioned above). The shots desensitize your system to the allergen over time until you cease to have a noticeable reaction. They are only advised for people with fairly minor (although still unpleasant) allergies to start. If they were successful for a person to now live with 4 cats, OP is probably not as allergic as the average person who is allergic to cats. (Some people can become desensitized over time just from living with an animal without shots, too.)

I have two cats, have worked rescue and had 4 cats growing up . . . . if they are cared for and kept indoors they can absolutely live to be 20. All 4 of mine from childhood were in that rang. I have a nearly 17 yo. and 14 yo now.
