Anyone who has spent any length of time in China recognizes that there is very subtle but fundamental disregard for human life there that is very disturbing. Millions of people live in horrible poverty and the government does nothing. 100 people will die in a government sponsored bridge project (because it was cheaper to do less safely) and by-in-large the society doesn't bat an eye. Female abortions occur by the hundreds of thousands (and infanticide is common in some parts) It's so striking to me and in sharp contrast to life here in the states where regardless of one's religion (or lack of religion) there is a fundamental belief that human life is sacred and to be protected at all costs. Not true in China and it definitely originates from the government and trickles down into the subconscious of the people.

That said, i individually met hundreds of gracious and compassionate Chinese people.

I'll add that this is also the case in India. I tend to think it's just a function of having SO MANY people. Life is simply not as valued when there are billions of others just like you.

Not only do some of the not have regard for human life, they disregard animal life even more. Look at the way they treat animals - live skinning of dogs, cats etc. Sickening!!!! I think sooner or later their 'society' will pay...

Remember the exploding gas tanks on Pintos?

Fuel tank controversy

Controversy followed the Pinto after 1977 allegations that the Pinto's structural design allowed its fuel tank filler neck to break off[9] and the fuel tank, in all too common occasions, to be punctured in a rear-end collision,[9] resulting in deadly fires from spilled fuel.
[edit] Allegations and lawsuits

Critics alleged that the vehicle's lack of reinforcing structure between the rear panel and the tank meant the tank would be pushed forward and punctured by the protruding bolts of the differential[18] — making the car less safe than its contemporaries.

According to a 1977 Mother Jones article, Ford allegedly was aware of the design flaw, refused to pay for a redesign, and decided it would be cheaper to pay off possible lawsuits for resulting deaths. The magazine obtained a cost-benefit analysis that it said Ford had used to compare the cost of an $11 repair against the monetary value of a human life—what became known as the Ford Pinto Memo.[16][19][20]

An example of a Pinto rear-end accident that led to a lawsuit was the 1972 accident that killed Lilly Gray and severely burned 13-year old Richard Grimshaw. The accident resulted in the court case Grimshaw v. Ford Motor Co.,[21] in which the California Court of Appeal for the Fourth Appellate District upheld compensatory damages of $2.5 million and punitive damages of $3.5 million against Ford, partially because Ford had been aware of the design defects before production but had decided against changing the design.

And don't forget that cute, white, young girls and women are "more valuable" in terms of media coverage here in the good 'ol US of A. Minorities are invisible unless a scapegoat is needed or exclusion or discriminatory practices are in play.

We have this now! These are the terrorists. Income gap has to shrink first.

I don't undertand why not more people are ripping on the parents!
When you're child is gone, which you should notice and start looking, wouldn't one of the parents look in the street first? It took them way long to find her. The parents are 100% responsible for what happened.

it's very tragic and the drivers of the van are serious assholes together with everyone who walked by.
BUT, she was 2 years old. HER PARENTS should have watched her.

I can't find the article but the mother left the little girl in the family's hardware store for a few minutes while she went to get her laundry which had finished drying and by the time she came back the little girl had wandered outside and was gone. She was apparently looking for the girl but couldn't find her. The pictures of the parents shows them very distraught. I wouldn't judge.

You are insane! You cannot even compare the US to China when it comes to their "habit" of cutting products with harmful materials (melamine and baby formula, toothpaste and antifreeze). The Chinese have a wholesale disregard for life.

Wasn't this also the case with the tobacco industry, ie they knew cigs killed you but did a cost benefit analysis and decided all was okay.

There was a segment on the Today show where no one in for hours intervened when a seven year old girl screamed that she was being abducted by a man who was not her dad. This was in NY.
