I agree completely with the complaints about fit and trendiness. When all of the rich girls from Fairfax at your daughter's school start wearing a brand, you know it's time for you to stop...Almost all of their clothing is cut for very skinny women with childlike proportions, and most of it comes in ridiculous colors/patterns like neon green or orange and blue paisley.
I did have some luck at the J Crew outlet though. They had basic chinos and shirts on sale for $18. |
| Ha 19:05 I wonder what you think of me on the street. I wear size 2 or 4 at jcrew, fully embrace the bright colored denim this spring, always love their basic bright shorts, and think you can never go wrong with a jcrew blazer and jeans in the fall/winter. Def am not a trendy dresser by any means. |
You don't understand what a drought is? |

In college, I wore almost exclusively j crew. And a lot of Lilly Pulitzer. I was a bit over the top preppy at that age. Now, I wear a few things from j crew, and tend to shop frequently at Land's End, LL Bean, occasionally j McLaughlin (for things that aren't totally screaming my name is Bunny), Nordstrom, and small specialty shops. I Find it very difficult to find classic, American clothes that don't break the bank or look overly styled nowadays.
I love GiGi new York for bags and small leather goods, Stephen Bonannos for my every day summer sandals, and have an obscene number of LL Bean tote bags. I wear Tory Burch occasionally, but find the line to be overdone most of the time. |
Don't get me wrong, some people can totally pull it off. Even I have a pair of red pants. But I think J Crew lost a lot of their middle aged customers who used to buy basics and good work clothing by raising prices and totally switching gears. |
| I stopped buying any JC when they changed fit models maybe 7 or 8 years ago (?). I distinctly remember the realization that all of their models were now ass-less. |
| I love Jcrew. You do have to check the labels and make sure you're getting 100% wool or cotton though. No poly blends! |
| I was having a hell of a time finding new casual/business casual clothes (totally struck out at every store from h&m to nordstrom) and just found some stuff at a j crew store for the first time in years. I found their bootcut jean flattering to my pear shape and less low waisted than any of the designer jeans I tried at Nordstrom. I am minimalist but not super preppy. I got a lot of compliments on the casual friday outfit i wore today. But their stuff ain't cheap and it may fall apart in a couple months. |
Thanks for posting this. I just looked up GiGi and LOVE them. I'm going to order one now. J. Crew has become crap. I don't have issues with their fit, but their quality gets cheaper as the prices go up. Makes no sense. |
Lands End. Also Boden, but pricier. Forget J.Crew. It's total crap. |
And boob-less. And shoulder-less. Essentially, I think their fit model is a Thai 10 year-old boy. |
|
I love the new JCrew and find tons of great work clothes there, but I agree that their prices have gotten a bit out of control.
Lands End Canvas is a good place to find similar styles and good prices on basics like cardigans. |
| Oh man 11:59 described by body post kids to a T. No boobs, no butt. I call it preteen boy. I guess the only upside is clothes look cute on me |
| Ll Bean and Eddie Bauer have had surprisingly nice simple, traditional clothing the last few seasons. I used to shop at j crew quite a bit but now I don't even open the emails. |
Yes! Starting last year I bought a bunch of Caslon tees. They are what JCrew used to be in terms of quality. I havent been able to find a good JCrew tshirt in ages. So sheer, and who wants to layer up tees in the summer?! |
