What to do with perfectly safe, sturdy Pali drop down side crib???

Anonymous
Just wanted to say that I received a drop-side crib from someone a few years ago and my husband went to Home Depot and spent about $5 on a few solid bolts to bolt the drop side to the corner posts. SO much cheaper than buying a brand new crib for our little one. And I was sooooo appreciative of their generosity and hope that someone would rescue it from going to the landfill....

If you have a drop-side crib, it can easily be bolted to make it safe. Use word-of-mouth in your moms groups and also work friends may know someone who would benefit from your generosity. These cribs cost $300+ and are made of beautiful wood, no reason to let them be destroyed if they could bless someone else for the small price of a $5 home depot trip.

Put it in the attic and save it for your grandchildren.

Try to give it away, word of mouth. I read that guys letter. He discouraged you from giving it away but didn't say you couldn't.

I agree with you that it's BS.

This is what I did with ours. Took off the front panel, used chalkboard paint on the mattress board and it was done. Very easy and very practical.

Ha! Sounds like you've been talking to my mom! She carted out her 30 year old stroller for us to use - which was basically a piece of fabric wrapped around a rusty metal pole, with wheels.

this is such bs, this is just corporations using the goverment to sell new cribs. in all these cases of death, it was usually with the crib not being put together correctly, or in a state of disrepair. Throwing away perfectly good items, thats the american way!

I don't understand why this is so enraging. Can you not step back and see the bigger picture? I'm glad our govt monitors product safety even if it means some items get trashed from time to time. There is no shortage of cribs (used or otherwise) in the world. I'm glad there are laws that protect lower income people or people who simply don't follow the news as much from other folks' dangerous castoffs. It is better for a baby to sleep in a PNP than a dangerous crib regardless of the brand name. If you want to argue with the statistical threshold for danger that's another thing but you're not making that argument and I find it insane that you insist your crib is safe based on a sample of N=1 ( you) when the cpsc used large sample data to make this decision.

Mine too! Their basement is filled with rusty baby furniture with nails sticking out. They saved it for our kids. Um, thanks but no thanks!

It's nice that you want to help others by giving a crib away, but as you clearly know now, it's illegal even to give it away. Stop focusing on this. Throw it in the trash and move on, for god's sake. You're missing the bigger picture that drop side cribs can kill babies. So yours is high quality and probably fine--right, we get that you're frustrated. Fine. I for one am impressed that after recalling many and then making the rest illegal to trade, the agency is following up on craigslist. Good for them.

You are a class act!

I have the Pali Sabrina crib as well...in fact, 2 of them! If you notice, BOTH sides have the drop down feature, allowing for placement flexibility in a bedroom. The crib comes with BOLTS to secure the side that is NOT being used as a drop side. So the solution is so very simple...as BOTH sides can be bolted and rendered stationary, simply bolt both sides. No more drop down. And since the Pali Sabrina is not part of ANY recall, even though it is a drop down, sale of this crib is not prohibited on Craigslist.

1) this thread is originally 5 years old and the last thread was 2 years ago

2) yes, all drop-down cribs illegal to sell or ever give away, not just those that were recalled. This is a fact.
