What to do with perfectly safe, sturdy Pali drop down side crib???

Anonymous
I have a Pali Sabrina crib bought in 2005 that is in amazing, amazing condition. It is an incredibly safe, sturdy, beautiful crib that got us through two high energy boys. Now with the ban on these cribs, I am at a loss as to what to do with it. It makes me sick to throw it away - the absolute waste is beyond disturbing. I understand the ban as it applies to lower quality cribs etc. but to have such a broad ban makes no sense to me. So the question is - what can I do with this perfectly good crib? I cannot donate it, I cannot sell it... and I have to believe that there is another alternative to adding to our landfills. Please help.

I've also heard that some manufacturers have a kit to convert a drop side into a fixed side crib. It's apparently just a matter of screwing the drop side into place. Maybe see if that's an option, then donate it?

Or put the word out that you have it to give away -- someone you know probably knows someone who could use it. (says a mom who is using a hand-me-down drop-side Pali crib for her second child, after her sister-in-law also used it for two kids.)

Took ours to the transfer station in Montgomery County. Yes, terrible waste but no charity can take it.

Perhaps list it as free on Craigslist with the explanation you have provided here?

You can bolt the drop sides shut and give it to a friend.

I would use it. Pali has some good info on their site, they were not part of the reclal but part of the new law. Amazing how law makers make good quality brands follow the same rules as crappy cheap ones.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but why can't you sell it on craigslist? If you write in your post about the recall, etc....is it breaking craigslist rules to sell it? Illegal?

I would totally sell it on Craigslist. I imagine there are plenty of people like me (read: short) who are groaning over the drop-side ban and would love to still purchase a good quality d/s crib.

It's illegal to sell a recalled item.

Give it to a friend. I always had drop sided cribs. They worked just fine......

We have two drop side cribs we still use for our kids. One we purchased from PBK and the other we got on Craigs List. I think we paid $25 or $50 for it. After reading a PPs post, I guess maybe it was illegal for the seller to sell it? However, we were explictly looking for a drop side crib and know this one is well made. I would sell it or list as free rather than dump it - I am sure there are plenty of people who would love to use it.

A few weeks old, but here's an article on CL/Ebay continuing to allow illegal drop-side cribs to be sold on their sites:

http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/retail/2011-08-05-cribs-selling-ebay-craigslist_n.htm

Excerpt:

EBay agreed to shut down its used crib auctions within a few weeks, according to a statement by eBay and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) provided to USA TODAY on Saturday.

Craigslist said Friday that it recently updated its "prohibition notices and information page" about used cribs at CPSC's request but that listings are moderated by site users.

I actually had a drop side crib that was never recalled but it is now illegal to sell/re-sell any drop side crib, so I was in a similar situation. I posted mine on Craigslist under "free" and made clear that most drop side cribs were recalled and that it was illegal to sell but not give away. I got numerous request for it. I also advised the person that picked it up what the concern was and that she could get repair kits. She was very thankful to have it.

I got a few nasty responses that I shouldn't be giving away a recalled item. Oh well.

You beat me to it! While you cannot sell it, you can in fact freecycle it to someone who needs a new(er) crib, but cannot afford it.
