But maybe that's not what your friend would prefer.

Then that friend should get a job that involves being paid for actual work done rather than guilting their friends into buying crappy stuff. Most people I know who do sales parties are people who choose to stay at home rather than work. That's a valid choice but their friends shouldn't have to finance it.

Totally. I work full time and I don't need my SAHM friends guilting me into attending or throwing parties on weekends when I'd rather hang out with my kids.

Here's a super informative report about direct sales companies.

The moral of the story: you don't really make any money in direct sales. They are all pyramid schemes.

Y'all are some bitchy ladies and I frankly am glad that I don't have you as friends. Seriously. Damn.

The feeling is mutual. I have no interest in attending your sales parties.

I considered selling both Stella & Dot and Silpada and after talking to a lot of women, from all various backgrounds, they all felt that it was an obligation to attend theses parties, that the jewelry was either poorly made (Stella & Dot) for the price or just overly expensive (Silpada). Also, when you are a new rep your "mentors" are pushy! And who hasn't attended or been invited to an at home party, rather it be Southern Living, Pampered Chef, Silpada, Sex Toys, etc. - old news!

Don't do it! I didn't after all my research and am so happy I didn't!

And I don't actually host these parties. I work full time. As a lawyer. But I'd still go to the parties to support my friends b/c that's what I do. Support my friends.

I am very familiar with Stella and Dot pieces having been invited to several shows and being hounded by the local woman here to become a stylist so she can make money off my hard work. I would love to do it but the quality of some of the pieces for the pricetag is not worth it. Some of the pieces are good but some are really very cheaply made and not worth the money. It can be very disappointing if you buy from the catalog or online without seeing the item.

I have talked to several Stella and Dot salespeople and they were very honest with telling me that you figure out "groups" of people who can have a show. Then the only realistic expectation is two shows a year with each group to correspond when the line changes twice a year (Fall and Spring). The other problem is that there are only a few pieces that are new. If you look at their catalogs for the last few years they still have pieces from 2-3 years ago.

That is THE REAL TRUTH about Stella and Dot.

I realize you all are talking about Stella and Dot but if you are truly interested in working for yourself and making good money you should check out Mia Luxe. Mia Luxe is all about earning money while helping others. Basically, you work with schools and charity organizations and use their products to raise money. You get a commission on the fundraising sales and they school or charity also gets commission. The jewelry is really high quality - not sterling silver but not cheap costume jewelry either. They have a really nice selection. Another good things is that it is not a multi-tiered business so they designate territories you control. There is no pyramid scheme with uplines and downlines.

Think of how many schools are in your area. They are all your potential clients. And how many kids/parents attend those schools - they are your potential clients. For example, I am in Texas and there are 1700 schools in Texas. Can you imagine how much money you could make if you could even get a small percentage of those schools to work with you? And fundraising is easy - people are so sick of candles, wrapping paper, fudge - they want something long lasting and good quality. I have been working with them for the last year and it is an awesome company. They are so supportive and fun people. The company has been around since 2008 as an online store but only last year decided to get into fundraising.

If you are interested in a home based business with huge potential you should consider Mia Luxe. I am so happy I did and it feels GREAT to be giving back to others.

I am going to sign up with Mia Luxe. I just talked to their founder and there is a lot of income potential. Sounds like great support from their offices. BEST is I don't have to bug my friends and family. They have clients that WANT TO BUY.

Here is my issue. I was going to be an S & D stylist, until I found out that while some of the designs are done in the US, the jewelry is made in India and China! I will not promote sales to other countries when we have Americans who are out of jobs and starving.
Yes, the jewelry is cute, but my country is worth more to me than looking good!

OMG my friend just signed up with Stella and Dot and was blown away by the list of "suggested" sample pieces to get for your display. There is a list for $3000 and up!!!!! So you have to shell out thousands of dollars to actually get a display of enough items for it to be worthwhile. And they tell you the more that you spend on the display items the more money you make. They give you $350.00 in free jewelry but guess what? That was like 3-4 pieces that my friend ordered.

What a SCAM. And I just read the post above me - all the jewelry is made OUT OF THE COUNTRY - and it is so cheap. I got the Charlotte necklace on ebay and the clasp broke as I was putting it on. So that money is down the tube.

I personally would not shop Stella and Dot and I feel badly for my friend who just signed up. She saw the $350 in free jewelry for an investment in $199. But she never really stopped to look at the prices and how many pieces for $350.

What a shame.....

I equate Stella and Dot and Silpada to basically be costume jewelry that you would buy at Kohls or JcPenney. Ok to compliment an outfit but certainly not an investment or worth paying more than $20 for a piece.

gone are the days of the Avon lady . . .

I just attended a friend's Stella and Dot party recently, and she said in the invite, no pressure to buy. So I took her at her word, I didn't buy. I browsed, some pieces were kinda cute, but nothing really struck me enough to part with $59 or $89 or whatever, so I looked but did not buy. I assume this is OK, but the discussion here makes me wonder, is it rude not to buy something?
