Most of them are perfectly nice people with rational views. It's just that the only people I know who very flagrantly don't give a rat's ass about the environment - they're all Republican. You don't have to lean left to care about the earth, but I think it is one of those traits that Dems get credited with more often. (like crazy government overspending and freaking out about guns and the death penalty.) I have other Republican friends who deliberately throw out their recyclables in the trash, despite having recycling bins and a neighborhood that provides pickup, because "recycling doesn't pay for itself." I told them that schools don't pay for themselves and the war in Iraq doesn't pay for itself, but they don't seem to have a problem funding that. Other friends use last year's big snowstorm as a reason why they don't believe in global warming, and they're Republican too. In general, my Dem friends don't drive gigantic cars, scoff at recycling or question global climate change.

You are an idiot.

Lol. In the end, I'll just assume everyone is being ironic.

She's talking about people she knows. You think you know them better?

The owner of Results Gym used to drive one. Not sure if he still does.

It's a good assumption

Not an idiot, just someone who knows my friends' political leanings and occasionally sees trends in behavior. any intelligent person with a reasonable amount of judgment might occasionally draw conclusions from what they see around them. I have a lot of friends who are on facebook, and over the last year or so, it's become pretty obvious who leans left and who leans right. (Hint: the health care bill has generated a lot of discussion, not all of it civil.) The only (small number of) people I know who do not recycle self-identify as Republican. The only 2 people I know who drive Hummers self-identify as Republican. Every person I know who questions the idea of climate change on Facebook self-identifies as Republican, except for one guy I know who seems to find fault in everything any politician does, so I don't know his leanings.

I am NOT saying all republicans do this stuff, or that there is anything wrong with voting that way. My parents are very good about recycling and they are faithful GOP voters. Plenty of my red-leaning friends are concerned about the environment. Everyone has their own reasons for voting as they do. Fiscal conservatives have a tough time voting Democrat, and I respect fiscal conservatism. The OP asked if I knew someone who drives a Hummer and I said that I do, and speculated on the reason why, because I can't honestly see why anyone would drive a Hummer when there are so many more attractive cars that get better gas mileage. When you drive a Hummer, you're making a statement.

You are saying it's "Republican behavior" which is an idiotic statement.
Anonymous
I never said "republican behavior." You're welcome to call me idiotic all you like, but I happen to find it idiotic to assume that I think all republicans are anti-environment because of two people who drive Hummers and a small handful of people who don't recycle. I was merely speculating on one friend's motives for driving a hummer. Driving a Hummer to say "screw you, environmentalists" would fit right in with her anti-health-care-bill and pro-Iraq-war philosophies. (which I know from her frequent, impassioned Facebook posts.)

speaking of which, and sorry that this is COMPLETELY off topic, I just watched "In the Valley of Elah" last weekend. Every Iraq war movie I have seen thus far has left me feeling extreme anger towards our administration at the time. I told my husband (who was in the military when it all started and thank goodness got out right before they instituted stop loss) that I will NEVER EVER forgive Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and the rest of them for what they have done to our soldiers and their families. Just absolutely appalling.

OK, sorry, carry on with the Hummer hate

I suppose you won't forgive Obama and Gates, either, for continuing said policies.

while I get where you are going...this is NOT the same. They didn't take us into an unnecessary war under false pretenses. So, while I'm not thrilled that we are still fighting, I think the current administration has made the only reasonable choice given the circumstances. NONE of the options were good, but they had to pick one.

And let's be honest, you can't talk about what is going on in Afghanistan now without talking about the time, energy and resources that were wasted in Iraq.

i need to recycle more. didn't realize everyone else complied. such a pain to separate stuff ...
