It was sarcasm. Of course, they're acting in a violent manner; and I'm also tired of people excusing that kind of behavior. |
| I wonder if people would have helped those girls if the victim started to beat them in self-defense (well, going a little beyond self-defense)? Maybe that is what he will do if he is a victim of something like this again. |
Sorry, I read it quickly! |
Not a problem! Sometimes sarcasm doesn't work in an e-mail or post. |
| The experts say to look confident and aware to try to avoid these kinds of attacks. The social rules on the metro dictate otherwise. Most riders are reading and/or trying very hard not to notice the other riders. Nobody even makes eye contact. It's like a porn store. |
That is completely beside the point. (And yes.) The point is that 2.17 total crimes for every million riders is an extremely low number, and shouldn't create "alarm." That poster, who's now started a second thread on how dangerous metro is, has her head up her ass. Of course every crime is one too many and we should insist that metro police stations and trains adequately. But to look at those stats and express alarm is to be ignorant of what the numbers mean. And the PP was specifically referring to those statistics and wondering if she should ride the metro in from Bethesda to union Station. Puh - lease. |

When traveling that way, at least be careful with your purse . . .

PC Police here. Will you please retract your description? We're sure you didn't mean to include the term "black" when describing the girls who were just engaging in a little "horseplay" (description by another poster). Thank you for your cooperation. |

We don't know what happened prior to the videotaping. |
Soundbite from George H.'s defense attorney?! |
Someone saying something like this must be trying to be needlessly provacative or has never been on Metro with large groups of teens looking to target someone. http://www.tbd.com/blogs/tbd-on-foot/2011/01/man-attacked-by-kids-at-l-enfant-metro----bystanders-watch-film-6880.html If the guy works in a flower store I'm wondering if he was targeted for seeming gay. (I'm gay myself before PP attacks me.) I hope the poor guy suffers no long term damage. I will never ride metro alone or with my kids at off hours. Do people think that these kids are going to grow up to be empathetic law abiding citizens magically at 18? How is blaming the victim useful to anyone? Which school is it in NW DC PP? |
| I really wish more people would visit some of our public high schools and see the kids adrift there. There are many wonderful, caring teenagers who work hard and will likely be the kinds of adults who'll make contributions to society in whatever work they do. And I don't mean just those at the top academically. I'm referring to great, well-grounded kids who have empathy for others and take pride in their work. At the same time, we've got so many who, for one reason or another, are not being parented. They're also not getting exposure to much that's upllifting, and they are becoming so de-sensitized by what they see and hear on a daily basis in their neighborhoods, plus on the radio, TV, internet, MTV, etc. that they really aren't "feeling" a sense of right and wrong. |
| Maybe this school in Van Ness? |
Not the poster you're quoting and hate to say it but the kids are usually black (and maybe "usually" should be in parenthesis). |
