I had a male friend in high school named Kelly (born late 1970s). I also went to high school or college with guys named Ashley, Lindsey, and Lauren. There are so many names that used to male names but females "took over.".
I knew a cute male Kelly in HS too. I like it!
I still get nostalgic thinking about the dreamboat male Kelly I knew in college, so I love the name! And there is a boy Kelly in my kids' daycare right now. Go for it!
NO.
Actually, I kind of like it more for a boy!
I'm sure the DCUMs have their opinions, but I had a massive crush on a hot guy named Kelly when I was in college....
I have a brother named Kelly (who was born in 1968 and also is pretty good-looking--wonder if any of these other DCUMs are talking about him?). I vaguely remember him getting teased a bit as a boy, but honestly I remember "Kelly, Kelly, bowl full of jelly" more than anything about him having a girl's name. And I think we all got teased for one thing or another. He's never mentioned not liking his name.
Not a fan.
Well, it's unanimous. Name your boy Kelly and lots of folks will hate it, but he'll be hot!

I admit I was nervous when my son bought a powder pink shirt and wore it to school. I told him it was fine but that he might get teased. But my son, it turns out, is "that kid." He just has a natural confidence and charisma and the other boys thought it was "cool." One kid tried to tease him but my son scorned him and his friends joined in. So it is very possible that your son could wear this name well, if he is the type of boy that can carry it off.
But what if he isn't? Then it may be a problem. Ridiculous, of course, that we should care about such things. But people do. Personally I like it. But I'm also a child of the 70's with that hot-bad-boy from the Bad News Bears association. |
The only male Kelly I knew was from when I was in college and he was HOT! the first time someone hears a name they feel is traditionally for the opposite gender, it sounds wierd, but then it is forgotten pretty quickly. For example, I have also met a few Tracy's, all seem to be from Texas. Again, it would catch me off guard as I would be expecting a female, then it is quickly forgotten once you get to know the person.
OP here -- thanks everybody, this was really enlightening!
