How Are A Meet Lineups Determined on Your Team?

Generally it’s a flow chart

1.) How well liked the kid is
2.) Religion of parents
3.) how much a pain the parents will be if their kid doesn’t get their favorite strokes
4.) ability and times.

Sometimes coaches also make strategic decisions about where to place kids based upon times and swimmers from the other teams. Johnny might have a faster 50 BK than Mike but he might also be the only legal 50 Fly or most competitive against the other team’s best flyer. Mike might have a good enough BK time to still get the team points so coach makes a strategic decision about where to place kids. If he has faster times in the events than the kid swimming 3 events it might be worth gently inquiring with the coach. It’s possible since you’re new that the coach somehow doesn’t have all of his times (they likely can’t use USAS or last years summer swim times)

+1. There is strategy that goes into what events kids swim, especially if they are in the top 3 in the majority of events, but there should not be a situation like your son’s where he is not maxed out on events and there are kids with slower times than him entered in events that he could have swam. They generally will not use club times or last summer’s times from a different team though.

At our pool, only time trial times, or times from that season's meets count for the ladder.

Our coach does the lineup, based on the current season ladder with exceptions made early on for top swimmers who miss time trials, and sometimes seniors at the last home meet. The reps handle letting the coach know who is available, communicating with swimmers and parents, lining up available alternates due to last minute changes, etc. but they have no input on the lineup itself other than confirming eligibility.

So they would not use an old time that a returning swimmer has not replicated this season? We have a couple of kids who don't swim year round who posted very fast times at the end of last season that they were nowhere near in time trials. I think our coach might still use that old time.

The coach says current year, that’s all I know. If you swim at trials, that’s your starting point for the summer. I’ve personally only ever known her to disregard that for All Star level swimmers who weren’t at time trials (in other words no one is surprised by them swimming the A meet).

If it's the first A meet of the season, some teams will allow times from the previous year when doing their ladders. We do that for our team. After the first a meet though, all times considered must be earned in the current season.

We are new to A meets this season and our pool has a 2 individual strokes per swimmer limit for each A meet, is this an NVSL rule? If not, is it common for teams to do this?

That is an NVSL rule. Each swimmer can only swim two strokes and relays (which do not count towards the max.)

What seems to vary between teams is how what you swim on Saturday impacts what you can swim on Monday. Some teams don't let you swim a stroke on Monday if you swam it on Saturday.

For us it is "if you place in the A meet you can't swim it." Especially helpful for 8U trying to get breast or butterfly legal.

Csl lets you swim 3, but the league rule is if you finish in top 3 on Saturday, you can’t swim at the B meet on Wednesday.
