I live in AL and am not sending my DD to UA where she can go for free. Rushing and football culture, rednecky, conservative, Trump loving, Christian, etc I just don’t see how it’s a good formative environment.

Yes, there will be rich kids from Southern families so networking is good. But no, thanks.

Going to Alabama from out of state, particularly from the NE, is a different experience. Many are National merit finalists or qualify for the highest scholarships and are in the special programs. They also aren’t uniformly Christian or Trump supporters (ZBT (Jewish) is the fastest growing fraternity on campus). The school offers amazing opportunities for these kids, but it may be easier for them as they are outsiders from southern culture from the start.

There is a reason. They are creating a major research institution and using scholarships to attract top kids. They hired the former President of Ohio State as their president with a mandate to focus on scientific research. He successfully did this at TOS. Alabama is extremely well-managed and they have the finances to do this. Impressive place.
