I have a high school friend that did this when we were 40 or 45. She worked with a trainer specifically to get in shape like this for a competition. We are no 54. She's still in good shape, but didn't maintain anything like this level. My impression was that it was a program tailored similar to Couch to 5k - obviously different goals and training, but same concept.
