| DCUM is usually anti boarding for some reason. Go to visit back day at Deerfield and be amazed. It s no brainer once you see the level of facilities, academics, and training for life. |
Agree 100%. I used to think I could never understanding sending one's child away for high school and then I actually learned what boarding schools offer their students. The Seven Schools are akin to the Ivies - Deerfield has tremendous resources and a Deerfield education will benefit your child in myriad ways for the rest of their life. |
| Depends on how mature the kid is. Most kids aren't ready to be away from home at age 14. |
They could offer my 14 year olds a direct admit to Stanford or Princeton and I wouldn't take it. You don't get those years back and I cherish the time with my kids. I'm not a helicopter mom when they're around but I like seeing the daily. |
So basically it’s all about what you want rather than what’s best for your kid. |
| After working at a firm that represents students sexually abused at boarding school, I don’t think I could ever send my kid to one to no matter how good the educational opportunities were. Seem predators seek out those environments. |
| Many predators at Deerfield and heavy drug use |
Yea, John Austin isn't really an ethical or honesty person either. |
Because no level of academics or facilities can justify shipping your kid off at 14 or 15. You will never get that time back. Daily dinners, late nighttime chats, being there when they are happy and more importantly when they are stressed. Rethink it. |
+1000 Sorry, but nice facilities don't replace mom and dad. You're kidding yourselves if you think this is what 14 YOs "need." |
Having worked at a firm representing victims… I would never send my kid to: Catholic Church; Boy Scouts; any school or after care program; doctors office; gymnastics club; summer camp etc etc. But I like the thought behind your reasoning. Unfortunately it happens everywhere. |
Ha. Okay. Interesting advice from someone who has never experienced it. I had one at BS and one at the public school. I spent very similar amounts of time with each. BC of travel sports teams and other activities we never saw the one at the public school. Unless you have had a similar experience I’m not sure you understand the reality of the situation. Why are you not also piling on the thousands of summer camp families in the DMV. Where I come from we would never send a kid to summer camp and miss out on those free days of sunshine and summer fun. They should really rethink sending their kids away for weeks at a time in the summer. |
There are sexual predators everywhere, I agree. I have also done Boy Scouts and physician cases. But boarding school is a specific type of access with the ability of a parent to monitor and intervene severely limited. For example, there are many ways a parent can limit opportunity for sexual abuse in Boy Scouts and the doctor’s office. Far fewer opportunities in boarding school. |

My nephew is from an upper middle class family and is currently at Deerfield. He is a great kid but his taste got WAY more expensive. He used to come on family gatherings at the family vacation home and now he goes on "internships" in Asia and his friends celebrate their birthdays by taking a group of them to the Caribbean.
Your student will learn what REAL money is at DA. |
| Wasn't the HOS of Deerfield previously working at a school founded by a dictator? |
