Help me curate a 90s summer

I love the concept but it's hard to do in isolation. One thing I miss was people just striking up random conversations. I talked to people on trains, in waiting rooms, there was often at least a Hi type acknowledgement. Now everyone is buried in a phone and it almost seems disruptive or surprising for someone to speak.

Watch the movie Before Sunrise for a good reminder of what it was like in the 90s, pre-cell phones. Chance encounters, long conversations, and really living in the moment without fomo or performing for a digital audience. Human connection was so much richer.

I don't know that I would have the stamina to relive that even if I wanted to, but it would involve: flip phones; happy hours that stretch into 4 am last calls; boozy brunches and flea markets on Sundays; and a couple of lost weekends in the Hamptons.

With the exception of flip phones, this is still going on.

Every now and then I watch Rosanne… mid nineties. Still funny…

If you have any friends w/landlines you can ask one to page you.

And:

• If you still have a VCR, pop in a movie (or two.)
Bonus if you still have a videotape rewinder too.

• Use the CD 💿 player inside your car.

• Tell the kids they cannot go online until you get off the phone.

• Spend an entire Saturday shopping 🛍️ at your local mall.
(Sucks though if you live near me - all the malls around here charge now for more than two hrs. of parking!!)

You can still find 90s makeup, from MAC, Clinique and Revlon, easily. I bet you can find a 90s makeup book from Bobbi Brown or Kevyn Aucoin on eBay and copy the makeup looks.

It would be cool to score some Max Factor too! 💄

Lol. And buy some white eyeliner for lining your upper lids, and some dark lipliner for your lips!

Buy a map of your city for your car. Use it to navigate instead of your phone.

If you can’t find a place, go to a gas station and ask (they’ll probably look at you like you’re nuts and then pull out their phone to give you directions).

I never left and now have young adult children. The city is different now, and their social lives here aren't like mine was then. It's still fun, but a loss less affordable and accessible.

My first thought was to go buy some Viennetta— too bad you can’t find that any more.

Ha! Speak for yourself. I had a job and responsibilities. What I remember was how many places in DC were sketchy and dangerous even during the daytime.

Thank you for unlocking a craving that I didn’t even realize existed
