Inspired by the nostalgia of the JFK Jr Love Story series, I’m wondering what it would take to adopt a 1990s vibe for the summer (or maybe the spring).
What would it take to attempt to recapture that simpler time? Silence my cell phone No internet outside of the house, and only for specific tasks (no mindless scrolling) Going out more with friends. Just for fun. No big plans. Going dancing. (I’m probably too old to go clubbing, but I’d love to be out after dark listening to music with friends.) I won’t smoke, but every time I see Carolyn light up it takes me back to having a cigarette towards the tail end of a drunken night when everyone is standing outside of the bar/club/party trying to decide where to go next. Sigh. Simple clothes and makeup. Not fussing with my hair. What else? |

Have fun with that. That doesn't interest me at all.
Maybe the music. Bring back the music and play 90s music all summer long. I could get with that. The rest of it? Not so much. |
| Ride your bike over to your friend’s house! |

Music choices, for sure. Host a very laid-back party at your home.
You can still find 90s makeup, from MAC, Clinique and Revlon, easily. I bet you can find a 90s makeup book from Bobbi Brown or Kevyn Aucoin on eBay and copy the makeup looks. |

I'm with you for the going out with friends!
I also want to limit phone scrolling. I'm not sure if it's better, but it would be more '90s to only use phones for calling and texting (no images) and do all Internet activities on a computer. And I like the idea of no Internet outside the house except for specific tasks. I'll aiming to try to do more route planning ahead of time and practice reading maps with the kids, but won't give up Google maps or Waze entirely. |
most people did not smoke in the 1990’s. |
| Get a flip phone |

No amazon, no grocery delivery, no "order online, pick up in store". Spend your days running errands, searching for things that may or may not exist.
My 90s summers were running errands with mom or going to my cousin's house around the corner where we re-enacted power rangers or star wars in the back yard. |
I guess you weren’t in college in the early 90s. People still smoked…especially when out drinking. Anyone fellow Terps remember how smoky Planet X was? Or walking outside of Tracks on college night? Anyway, I haven’t had a cigarette since the early/mid 90s and even then I wasn’t a regular smoker. But people still smoked…especially young drunk people. |
I’m tempted…but I don’t have that much willpower. I’m willing to attempt to only use my phone for calls though. And to keep it tucked in my purse rather than in my hand or pocket. |
+1 it involves Other People and Other People suck these days. You need a time machine. |
| That was the time of my outrageously fun 20-something in NYC era. I don't know that I would have the stamina to relive that even if I wanted to, but it would involve: flip phones; happy hours that stretch into 4 am last calls; boozy brunches and flea markets on Sundays; and a couple of lost weekends in the Hamptons. |

Oooo I love this! Some ideas:
- pick up some magazines and hang out at the pool all day - go to a roller skating rink - drive in movie theater (may have to drive an hour or two to find one but worth it!) - spontaneous road trip that’s not pre-planned or based on an internet article/tiktok/whatever. - bike rides! Even in my 20s I rode my bike everywhere The biggest thing will be finding friends to do them with. 90s/00s were all about spending hours hanging out with your friends with no real plan or itinerary. |
| I'm going to this camp and they have you put your phones away: https://medomakcamp.com/ |
| Go to the oceans callin in OC. It's all 90s clap rock for divorced sad dads. |
