No they didn't. We're talking about high schoolers, most of them poor, who get sold a bag of goods by recruiters trained to tell them whatever they have to in order to get them to sell themselves to our government to use as cannon fodder. Most people joining the military are literal children when they are recruited.

I was working class before I became middle class, and you're right it took me a minute to connect those dots. My DC who grew up middle class figured it faster than I and I am grateful they did not volunteer. Options are important, which I recognize many do not have.
