Agree or Disagree: Princess Diana and JFK Jr had a similar level of fame or celebrity

I feel Diana was far more well known and loved worldwide. Thinking back to that period of the 90s when both were nearing the ends of their lives in particular.

Diana was much better known.

I knew the iconic photo of JFK Jr saluting at his father’s funeral but I was not aware of JFK Jr as a celebrity in his own right until the Seinfeld episode where Elaine goes to his gym and fantasizes about him.

Isn’t the fact that the #1 American sitcom at the time had an episode with a character fantasizing about him an indication of the American perspective on his popularity and fame?

He was perfect for the show because he was a thoroughly NYC obsession. And NYC was pretty much the extent of his reach.

+1. I was coming here to say basically the same thing.

This. Diana couldn't go anywhere in the world without hordes of people following her, not just paparazzi but just regular people. Her face was iconic. When she died it overshadowed the death of Mother Theresa.

Had JFK Jr not died, I think he'd be little more famous than other members if his family now -- Maria Shriver level I think. It's probable he and Carolyn would have divorced without having kids, so that spell would have broken, and he'd be just another rich nepo kid in NYC.

Why wouldn't they have had kids?

Diana was way more famous and beloved worldwide. JFK Jr. was more tabloid fodder.

True, but they were both constantly on the cover of People back in the 80s and 90s. Being the same age, I was a bit envious of their fame and money being as I was the twenty something just scraping by. It was a shocker when they both died in accidents within 2 years of each other. Something more sad about Diana's passing though. I actually think neither were very smart.

DP but I never got the vibe a bandaid baby for a toxic relationship was Carolyn's style.

The fact that this is even a question tells me how dumb and self centered Americans are.

I would say JFK and Princess Diana had a similar level of fame.

JFK Jr? No.

Not even close. No one was as famous as Princess Di. Maybe Michael Jackson.

A closer parallel would have been (Prince) Andrew in his young, pre-Epstein days. Both good looking men whose dating life attracted tabloid attention, were generally liked, but not household names beyond a certain narrow demographic. Both would have been largely forgotten by middle-aged if it hadn’t been for John’s tragic ending and Andrew’s enormous scandal.
Whereas Diana was a legend. EVERYONE in the world knew who she was, what she looked like, and had an opinion about her. Her fame showed no signs of flagging, even after her divorce and stepping back from her royal responsibilities.

Both were privileged, wealthy and good looking so yes. If they were born to or married commoners, we would never hear about them.

People went totally nuts when Diana died. I was a kid but I remember Diana's death was everywhere, people left flowers all over the embassies outside of the UK including here in the US. I don't remember anything close to that when JFK Jr. Died.

This is so true. I'm the PP who's the same age as Diana and I don't think I've ever seen such an intense, world-wide outpouring of grief as when she died. I can remember watching Peter Jennings announce that she had died - total shock. I also remember driving down Mass Ave past the British Embassay and seeing the flowers - they lined an entire block and people lined up outside for hours just to sign a memorial book.

The massive outpouring in the UK finally forced the Queen and Charles to come out of their palace and acknowledge the crowds and massive display of flowers and cards and stuffed animals that piled up in front of Buckingham Palace. They got so much criticism because they didn't come out for days to address the crowds and acknowledge their grief.

Nobody since has evoked such grief and devotion.
