Would you move to a nicer place if you can afford it?

There is a 2 years wait list to live here. Despite the roaches and perhaps the ethnic/demographic background of most tenants that some may have an issue with the place is a steal.

So I don't want to leave. Now recently I started recently and she hates coming to my place. She doesn't like the building, she doesn't like that from time to time it needs to be treated for roaches and I feel like at some point she may suggest we move in together or I find a better place.

Folks only paying $2200 rent on a take home pay of $11200 I won't move. And I am not even thinking about buying a house unless I get expelled from this place lol.

Would you move to a "nicer" place if your rent was this low.

You sound like me are you in DC though? Where do you live? I'm in City of Alexandria and it's getting way to rough for me as of late.

You can have your roaches, or you can have a girlfriend. Roaches are cheaper than a girlfriend, but most people prefer the girlfriend to roaches. That's what I'd pick at least.

But it's up to you. You pick roaches, well, enjoy your roaches.

+1. Well said. I recommend moving to a nicer place. It's reasonable for the girlfriend to want to date someone who has nice housing, as it says that the person has a good income and takes pride in their home.

Roaches are distgusting, terrifying in my view. I'm from Europe and have never seen them before in my country. Here, we had one time roach infestation. We took one piece of furniture from Facebook group; and when I was wiping the furniture drawers inside, I noticed a cockroach. After a day or two, I had a roach in my kitchen drawers, in my closet in the bedroom. I literally had almost a nervous breakdown. We tried every trick, got anti cockroach poison etc. I was scared of opening drawers in my kitchen. Eventually, they disappeared. I thought centipedes were bad; but cockroaches- are worse. As a woman, if I saw a cockroach in somebody's place, I'm not coming back to that place.

Sheesh. Quit whining, go get a better apartment and open that one up to someone who needs it!!

people who choose to live with coaches and don’t just live with them out of financial necessity are NASTY. Op you are nasty.

I’m a landlord in DC. At my building very nice all renovated junior one bedrooms right now are at $2010-2100/month. The building is superbly clean never single pest infestation. I added inspection clause to leases so I could charge tenants like OP for any roach appearing on premises

OP is nasty and not compatible with his GF. He clearly can move to a nicer place as he overpays now.

What is your plan for your hoarded money?

Don't move. Roaches can be in nicer apartments also.
Sign up for the pest control as often as possible.

It's possible that you and what I am taking is a new dating person (sentence was unclear) you might not be on the same page in terms of lifestyle. Some people just need/want a more gracious living situation than one that has noticeable roaches. I understand they are pretty much unavoidable entirely, but the question is realistically how often do you see them?

Anyone over 30 needs to be well on their way to home ownership. And I would never date someone that lived in an apartment like OP described unless they were a student. Period.

When I got married DH moved us into a small townhouse and that caused many arguments. I don’t want to live attached to others - I need a house in a city.

You sound like a real piece of work. How long did it take for your DH to become your EXDH?

I pay roughly what you're paying and I own a townhouse with no roaches. Doesn't seem ideal.

But I would like to move to a single family home since we have young kids now. However that would mean either tripling my mortgage or liquidating almost all investments to buy in cash. I'm hoping that within a few years I'll be in a better position to move up in houses before our oldest is 5.

Good for you for not overextending yourself. I just have a bad feeling...We bought in August 2020 a $1600 sqft split level for 460k and we just sold it (moving to a different state) for 765k this past January 20206.. We did not do a single renovation and or improvement. I don't know I'll just caution people buying today. If you can't afford cash or 40% down just wait.

Pest control in individual apartment won’t help if the whole building is infested

Most apartment treat all the units a few times a year and you have to pay for it now too.

Many don't My mom lived in a similar building in Alexandria they didn't treat the building. Roaches were everywhere crawling from neighbors. Sealimng off the apartment was helping a little bit, but they would still pop up in bathroom and kitchen .

I lived in a very expensive building in NYC that had roaches and then I moved to another one. And the new one also had roaches..then I moved again.. in NYC roaches are everywhere so disgusting. Not uncommon to pay $5k/month in NY and share your apartment with roaches.
