Rachcel Carson Middle School Ridiculous Tardy Policy

Anonymous
This is the second topic this year on Carson being too strict after a kid had their third or fourth referral for rules violations, I don’t think those were tardies but the kid pushing and “play fighting” in the halls.

I have a kid at Carson, I have not heard from people in our neighborhood that there is a problem at the school. The kids ride the bus and get to class on time. They are not getting written up for discipline issues. Maybe the parents who are complaining about the school being so strict need to do something about their kids behavior and schedule for school.

There are other topics where parents are complaining about boys behaviors towards girls. So my guess is that we have parents not parenting and their kids are being obnoxious.

Easy answer: school bus

Line for security is for bus riders too. There is chaos. My child is perpetually late even though bus arrives at 7:10-7:25. It’s an administrative failure.

My child takes the bus every day and does complain about the line for security but has never been late to class. If the bus is late, they're not tardy.

You should consider dropping your child off 15 minutes earlier.

The reason is simple. The middle school starts very early. And some school bus also arrives very early. By dropping off the kid can sleep little more.

My kid leaves for his bus stop at 6:40 in the morning. He would get maybe an extra 10-15 minutes of sleep if we drove him. We don’t because he has a bus and the kiss and ride at schools are a giant mess. Your kid can go to bed 15 minutes earlier and ride the bus. They will be fine.

DC also goes to Carson, he’s a slow kid so wakes up 70 min before school bus comes. I also wanted DC to sleep little bit more, as DC goes to bed very late all the time due to slowness, but I knew kiss n ride would only make things worse. Ride school bus if it’s an option, or drop kids off early.

Good. We need to go back to real consequences for bad behavior - at school but especially at home. Enough with the gentle parenting, mamas. These are your children, not your friends. You probably discipline your pets more than your kids.

Yes, this is it. DD is in HS now but Carson bus came super early. Middle schoolers need more sleep. I made DD take the bus anyway but I can understand how some parents might make the choice that allows the kid to get another 20-30 minutes of sleep.

It’s time to grow up. Leave earlier.

Many students opt out of the bus because of the increase in bullying, harassment, racism, and assault occurring on the buses. They say pull the tapes but many of these busses only have audio recording. We drive our child and two neighbors every day since there are kids watching pornography on the bus, using horrific language, and there was both an assault and a theft on the bus just since winter break. Then we drive pass Franklin’s kiss and ride and see no problems. Make busses safer, create a better school culture, and utilize some strategic planning to actually figure out why Carson went from fantastic and peaceful just a few years back to abject chaos and a trash pit school. The problem with tardy students isn’t busses, it’s institutionalized ineptitude. They are bleeding teachers, support staff, counselors. This isn’t a pearl clutching gentle Navy or Crossfield mom problem, this is a plea for someone to wake up and realize the “TJ feeder” glory days are over and we need to do better.

My kid and his friends have not had any issues on the bus to Carson, maybe it is specific routes but I have heard none of this from my kid. There have been repeated complaints about this on the board this year. I don't know if it is the same parents on repeat or there is a larger issue on specific routes that need to be addressed. The school some people are describing is no where near what my kid and his friends have experienced. We know kids at Carson from Navy, Oak Hill, Fox Mill, and Floris. I am sure my kid is in class with kids from other ES but those are the 4 ES that we know the kids who are at Carson. None of them have discussed these issues. And yes, we knows boys and girls.

If you are choosing to drive kids, then leave early enough that they get to class on time.

Maybe your kids are the ones doing the bullying. Maybe you’re a parent who does not promote openness. Maybe your kids are lucky enough to be in AAP and don’t experience these issues.

AAP kids and non-AAP kids are on the same bus, so I doubt that is it. My kid is not bullying, or if he is no one has said anything to us. He has had 0 disciplinary referrals in his 1 1/2 at Carson.

Carson isn't perfect, no school is. I know that there are kids who are poorly behaved. I am not saying that there are not. But the notion that Carson is falling apart because there are some out of control kids, which exist at every school, is crazy.

And if that is happening to your kid, I am sorry. That sucks and the school should be doing more to discipline those kids. Given that there are posts on the site complaining about how quick Carson is to punish kids, and at least one person in this thread has posted that their kid received ISS, I don't think Carson is ignoring all the cases of bad behavior.

If you are driving your kid to school because of behavior on the bus, that sucks and I am sorry. But leave 10 minutes earlier so your kid isn't late.

Carson has the double whammy of having a poorly-designed parking lot and not allowing walkers. The absolute worst was evening pickup from a large field trip. After my first one of those I learned to park across the street and walk over.

To be fair, Franklin is a much smaller school and they have a separate lot to go in for the kiss n ride. But if you come too late it does get backed up and then with the added time of the metal detectors your child will be late. We’ve adjusted for that by leaving earlier. I also think more kids may ride the bus to Franklin because there are no out of bounds students coming for AAP. With Carson, you have kids coming from further away so there are going to be more drivers so their kids can sleep more.

If you think Carson is bad, wait until you hit high school.

A good number of students who should be at Franklin are at Carson.
