It's amateur hour at the gym again

- DON'T COME LATE TO CLASSES (GO 10+ MINS EARLY)
- clean up after yourselves!!!!
- no perfume! no cologne!
- don't take cell phone conversations more than a minute

Plus, keep your crap contained. One guy (not new) at my gym has his water bottle on one machine, phone on another. He leaves towels wherever. Move your stuff! I just ask him if he's still still using that particular machine. He isn't.

OP here and it's exactly this. There are rules, there are customs. Don't be a bull in a china shop. Don't bring your giant duffel bag into a group fitness class--free lockers for exactly this purpose.

How is someone new to the gym supposed to know your special rules and customs? Why not try too be helpful instead of being a nasty b___?

OP and those like her fundamentally don’t understand that the gym she goes to is not actually her gym…

There are signs on the wall, for starters. Rules listed when you sign up.

Oh, bull.

We were all new once. Including myself, as a formerly obese person. Your inability to stick to going to the gym is no one's fault but your own.

Show up, have good etiquette, be considerate of others, and it'd be great to see you tomorrow.

It’s not bull. Maybe you were lucky and people didn’t treat you like garbage when you first started trying to improve yourself.

A good resolution for someone like you would be to try to be a better person.

You're projecting. I have been regularly going to the gym for 10+ years, and I have never once seen someone treat another person like garbage.

Or, perhaps you can share a specific example?

As long as people are courteous and mindful of others, no one gives a crap about what others are doing. Certainly no one is treating others poorly.

The fact that your response in a thread started to explicitly complain about new people in the gym was this:

“Your inability to stick to going to the gym is no one's fault but your own.”

tells me everything I need to know about you. No projection required.

That was in response to you saying people suggesting to follow considerate etiquette, is why people stop coming to the gym.

And I'm right. People stop going to the gym because they lack the drive, interest, discipline, or something else within themselves. Show up (ON TIME) and be considerate, and everyone will be kind.

Grow up and stop blaming others for you not going to the gym. I was a newbie. I've been there myself. No one has ever been a deliberate ahole, nor have I ever witnesses it. I asked for specifc examples - why can't you share any?

I don’t need to. Your attitude (that you have now doubled down on) is the only example we need.

But to get philosophical, one doesn’t need to be a deliberate AH to be an AH. Think about it.

They’re following the written rules. Y’all are b-tching about “unwritten” rules. Sorry your $20 a month doesn’t actually mean you own the place!! You’re just not as special as you think you are.

Cool. Continue to make excuses and see where that gets you.

They do, but I have never actually heard it be used.

Don't worry OPz most of us won't be able to afford to continue at the gym very long this year.

I personally see worse behavior from regular gym goers. As someone who was a newbie a few years ago, the new people are all hiding on the treadmill, in the corner with dumbbells or wandering around the floor trying to figure out what to do. I was so anxious in the gym the first time I basically wanted to be invisible.

Get over it, OP. They will either learn the rules or stop coming. Either way, this is something you will have to deal with for two weeks max. You'll live. Go eat a cookie, you could probably use it.

Same. I always felt really judged as a newbie in a gym and the regulars were so incredibly rude to me as an obese woman - twice I had people flat out tell me I didn't belong there. I am fortunate enough to have a basement with room for equipment - btw, I am no longer obese. I have probably paid far less on pro-level equipment and even random subscriptions I've tried over the past 15 years than I would have in gym fees anyway (plus it's now two adults + two teens using our home gym).

I'll bet OP also criticizes people who are overweight.

You know they do, lol! No doubt in my mind.

OP brought their duffel bag into a group class exactly a year ago, lol, and got side eye for it.

I am a DP and I have twice LITERALLY had people tell me I don't belong in a gym. Once was in a yoga class when someone told me I needed to move to the back because this class was going to be too hard for me (it wasn't) and once when I was walking towards the bikes and some girl pointed me in the direction of the recumbent bikes.
