Fed or Amazon

Office work is required but not for the whole day so people just pop in. Insurance is so much better than federal. DC did not wait till 26 to leave ours.

AWS is all in office except for those cheating the system. They are fine for a few years but at some point they will be forced out.

This. They will quietly track one's absence from office and then cite that later as cause for termination.

US Patent Office is almost always hiring, but now is not a good time to go there. A lot of uncertainty exists there right now.

In theory but not in practice. Lots of team dependant discretion.

Do not, DO NOT believe this! They can and will bring those persons back to the office or cull them. Hell they will bring them back to the office and still cull them.

I'm a former Fed and also former Amazon who left this spring after 4 years. I would not recommend Amazon, putting it lightly. It's everything you've already heard here and morale is in the toilet right now across the board. I am glad I jumped off that ship as I almost certainly would have been fired this past summer or fall- most of my division was, including some of the 10+ year basically lifers. I would only even briefly consider it if you go in with the mentality that it will be a short and painful stint but worth it for beaucoup bucks, but doesn't sound like that's the case here.

I have trouble believing the TC is the same as the fed job. I tripled my compensation by moving from fed to a similar company. The base pay was only slightly more but with bonus and RSUs it blew my fed compensation out of the water.

+1

AWS can be brutal. Most people do not last more than 2-3 years. You are constantly stack ranked. Constantly on the chopping block. Not worth it if lateral move money wise.

It's a L-5 job at AWS. So you were making $600k?? I think that wasn't Amazon...

I just looked it up. I didn't realize L5s were in the 200-300 TC range. Yeah, I'd pass. Amazon can be a great employer but that's a big risk to take on at that level of comp.

how do you transition to a $600k role from a Fed GS-14? Were you a data scientist at NIST or something?

A few years at Amazon will help your resume more than a few years as a fed.

My spouse was work from home long before Covid then forced in 5 days a week. Funny though his supervisor in Seattle was clearly rarely in the office. They do track it. Regardless of how hard you work after a few years you will be cut at the 3-6 range. Few make it longer than that but most are cut at some point.

Except sales no way an L5 is making 600, maybe an l7 or l8 or you do very well with rsus but after your four year contract your rsus get greatly reduced.

Not really and you have to survive those few years.
