Fed or Amazon

Anonymous
I am currently a Federal employee and in the running for a job at Amazon Web Services (AWS), which is an important and growing part of the company.

However, the pay for this position would only be a lateral move, and it’s in a different city. I had hoped for a salary increase of at least 20%, so this role may not be the right fit for me, even though I'm excited about the opportunity.

I have a few more rounds of interviews scheduled. Should I:

Cancel all interviews?
Speak with the hiring manager to see if there’s any flexibility on salary or if there are other roles I might qualify for? This would only involve a single interview.

I believe I should step away from the four-hour interview round, though.

In case, I am not clear, I am comparing total comp at both roles, including stock grants and pension.

AWS does not sound worth it if you have to move to a different city and the pay is the same

+1, also the job security seems worse (yes, even now)

AWS chews people up and spits them out. The only reason to move is the money. If they’re not giving you the money walk away. Let someone who actually lost their job deal with that mess.

Feel like I am a top performer (but who doesn’t) but I have no desire to work anywhere that is culling 15% or whatever of the workforce every year. I mean the politics alone must be a nightmare.

Should I meet with the hiring manager to explore other options like higher paying roles, or just exit the process? I'm weighing my interest in the role and any feedback received. I'd appreciate any insights!

Surprising because my child (23) out earns me (a 14-10 fed) at AWS. They enjoy the job. It seems pretty flexible. No strict accounting for hours. Office work is required but not for the whole day so people just pop in. Insurance is so much better than federal. DC did not wait till 26 to leave ours.

I was surprised as well when I applied I assume $300k would be normal senior individual contributor total comp. For almost any corporate role. I think I saw in news that poverty line in major metros should be $140k, so thats way low comp for big tech to earn the same as Fed

A job at Amazon that pays as low as a fed must be a pretty low level, miserable job.
