That’s one reason many students end up dropping out of college. The education no longer feels meaningful to them, yet they also don’t want to waste their parents’ investment. So once they land a job or secure funding for a startup, they often choose to leave school. Time to the market is so important now that job markets are shrinking |
My son is leaning towards this avenue. |
| If this is so, why not go with an affordable in state public university or a private that offers merit aid, then? |
I think that’s the coping mechanism many middle-class families are relying on right now. For households earning above $200K, merit aid remains quite limited. And I suspect tuition will continue to rise in the coming years. Many private schools will likely turn to full-pay international students. |
| I’m not convinced corporate loyalty was ever really as strong as people seem to believe. |
The sci fi writers of the cold war speculated what would happen when wealth was primarily being generated independent of human effort. Once everything is automated and human effort is no longer responsible for production, that is when Marx's theories start to make sense. Universal basic income and the nationalizing of personal assets and everyone gets more than they need. Teaching your kids to survive in that world sounds like a nightmare. |
You are also extremely important in the coming apocalypse. |
If they are willing to take care of sick people for free for sure |

Not spending a lot at all. DC got 30 credits transferred to Nova and finished another 10 by end of October. He is hoping to transfer to GM where one year costs $15k I believe.
He is working already and makes about $20k a year. He has no expenses. I'm paying for his college. He will use his money to invest. I have BA in finance. Younger kid has an inheritance. Absolutely not using the money for college. I'd use it only if he wanted to become a doctor. |
The education is meaningful, but you don't need to pay a school for it anymore, thanks in part to all that AI. |
Good for him. Tell him I said thank you for seriously considering it. We need more law enforcement officers. |
Then go to a cheap / non-selective uni on a full ride? Guess what SAT score is required for a full ride to Mississippi Valley State University? |
| OP you do realize that your kids don’t actually have to go to college, don’t you? It’s not a requirement. We’re saving for all of our kids, but one of them has expressed no desire to attend and that is ultimately going to be his choice. |
| You can’t beat college experience as part of learning to be an adult. There are hundreds of similar aged kids from different backgrounds around you navigating different challenges and celebrating successes. Should one pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for college is a different question and the answer to that is a NO. Anyone that tells you that going to an elite undergrad school is a must for future success is a moron. Grad schools are a different story. |
| All the more reason to live in a state with plentiful state school options (thanks VA!) |
