| Both good options, but you have a minor chance in hell getting into either. |
It’s a lot easier getting into Pomona than Amherst, since Pomona hardly gets DC applications. |
Why do you think that? |
+1, you want access to various opportunities! |
Just got back from visiting DS for Family Weekend. Oldenborg is one of DS's favorite aspects of his Pomona experience. He loves the language tables and currently has a fantastic single room there this year. I was very impressed by the language tables in the cafeteria, which were crowded and very much being used for their intended purpose. My impression is that Oldenborg is dated and kind of ugly in the brutalist manner of its era but has major charm nonetheless. I hope the new building, which I'm sure will be extremely impressive, will retain that charm. DS will probably study abroad and/or want a residence on the north side of campus next year in any event. |

DC is a first-year at Pomona, the kind of kid everyone called most intellectual at a HS known for intellectual kids. Loving the experience and taking advantage already of all the 5Cs have to offer. It’s a unique offering in the higher ed landscape to have both the small LAC experience (and benefits) and easy access to the broader community and choice of courses.
Can’t speak to Amherst with any solid authority as it wasn’t on DC’s list, but the consortium there is a far cry from the 5Cs as far as I’ve heard. |

Be careful of ED to Pomona. It is a very small admit rate (only 13% in spite of all the athletic admits, of which there are comparatively quite a few).
What will really help your application is if you can submit an SAT score above 1550. 155 students submit an SAT score, with only 39 students in the entire Pomona freshman class scoring above that. |
As a 5 College grad this is dead on. Having different types of schools available was a great resource- you get a state flagship with Div I sports, the highest ranked liberal arts school, an alternative college, and two fantastic women’s colleges. SOMEBODY has the library book or class or faculty you need. |
I know kids with very high SAT scores who didn't get in. Maybe Pomona doesn't care much about SAT. |
Our kid with a 1600 was rejected last year. |
Where did they go? |
No offense, Pomona was probably thinking why this person applied there. Only 55 freshman have an SAT score above 1550, so most likely fewer than 10 students have above a 1580, never mind a 1600. |
No relation |
Or maybe they were thinking there is essentially no difference between a 1550 and a 1600 and looked at other aspects of the application. There are only like 400 kids per year so 55 freshman is over 10%. |
| Simply put, Pomona is the best LAC in America. |
