Oh look, our resident assh0le bicyclist has entered the thread. STFU

Cow, I don't even own a bike. But the way you people react to them is the way my MIL reacts to spiders. Just the very existence of a spider gets her all riled up, regardless of whether it touches her or if she can even see it. You don't have enough problems.

Nah, your BS is not working here. We react this way because we deal with your shit every day. You are the problem!!! Again STFU

I am sure I am the problem in some spaces. In this one, though, I just think you should stop telling other people what to do. Really, just let people (and spiders) live their lives.

Cyclist vs pedestrian accidents are actually pretty rare, when compared with car vs anything. You only think about it because of all these "i was ALMOST hit..." Love that main character energy for you, but you were not hit. You might've had a lil fright. Eek! Poor baby.

Cyclists’ complaints about motorists are very similar to pedestrians’ complaints about cyclists, and motorists’ complaints about cyclists are similar to cyclists’ complaints about pedestrians. Nobody wants to be hit by someone going faster, but also, no one wants to have to slow down or stop. Everyone just wants everyone else out of their way.

Cyclists are an unwelcome intrusion to everyone else no matter where they ride, and yet, we need to make cycling a viable option to reduce carbon emissions, oil dependence, and traffic congestion. How do we do this in the least painful way? Are there other countries with as much of a car culture as the US who have managed to achieve harmony among pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists?

We really don't. That's what public transport is for. No one needs to ride their bicycle. Most don't do it for this reason anyway (hence the ridiculous uniforms).

By that reasoning, no one needs to drive a car. That's what public transportation is for.

Oh, what's that? PT is only for poor people, and your urban assault vehicles are sacrosanct? MMMk.

I don't think any one mode of transportation is the right one. A good mix, with thoughtful infrastructure, would get us way further than yelling about what other people should do.

The vast majority of people do not need to drive their car; that's true. However, they are not on the sidewalk and obey the traffic laws to a much greater extent. As I've said before, I take PT to get to work and back home. I don't drive or bike in the city. Bicycles aren't supposed to be on the sidewalk in the business district in DC. As a pedestrian, I want to be able to walk to work safely and not be run over by scooters and bikes. If you don't feel safe on the raod where you're supposed to be, talk to the city instead of trying to run me over.

You're so unbelievably full of shit and full of yourself. NO, I dont need to wait until someone hits me and puts me in the hospital to start calling out your despicable behavior. You're the one with the main character syndrome riding your bike wherever the eff you please instead of where you belong (newsflash, it's not on the sidewalk). Your gaslighting is not working here, you imbecile.

Is this ringing a bell for anyone?

A middle aged white male with a massive anger problem? I think you're describing most cyclists in this city.

This problem is pervasive and while I champion people not using cars to commute or travel, this is ridiculous and needs to be addressed. Pedestrians need to have a way to walk down the street safely. No bikes on sidewalks, strict obedience when it comes to ALL traffic signs and issuing tickets to those who don't comply.

I agree and please add ebikes and escooters to the list

E-bikes should be registered and insured. They are capable of deadly speeds.

Same with cyclists. Licenses, annual registration, insurance. Treat them equally.

Exactly! I see more of those than non-motorized bikes now anyway.

In 2023, there were 7,314 pedestrian deaths and 1,155 bicyclist deaths in motor vehicle crashes in the US.

There were too few cyclist vs pedestrian fatalities for the databases to even have a category.

CARS ARE THE PROBLEM. Bikes are an annoyance at worst.

I know, right? They can't get anywhere with pushing cars around so they just encroach on the pedestrian spaces. Sorry, that's not a solution.

I saw a cyclist almost hit a woman on Wisconsin Avenue in Chevy Chase yesterday. She had the walk signal and was in the crosswalk. Biker was clearly only looking for cars, never slowed down and almost ran her over.

There's a culture of lawlessness among bicyclists that the city needs to get a handle on. They don't respect any traffic laws. If they run you over, they will just speed away and you will never know their names.

I stopped crossing at 15th and F, NW from East to West becasue bikes would race down that hill through the red light and you couldn't see them through the cars stopped at the red light until it was too late. One morning one rider screamed at us as we jumped out of his way, despite the fact that he was 1. going through a red light and 2. painted on the bike lane it explictly says stop for pedestrians.

That's what happens when they've been able to get the laws re-written to give themselves an exception to all the traffic rules.
