Reinstall speed cameras in Kensington now!

And now compare this with Chevy Chase MD. There are like 4 F cameras on CT Ave in both directions between EW and Western/DC line. There is also one camera on CT between Jones Bridge and I-495 ramp. Then a few more further north on CT Ave between Beach to Knowles. Why aren't there that many on University? Contact your elected officials. They should be doing their job! Contact Marc Elrich. Contact Superintendent Taylor. Appalling.

A woman crossing on Viers Mill not too far from this spot was hit and died of her injuries this week.

Someone died a young human

I get it. Camera's are the only thing that slow people down (even if it's a brief one block brake check). There's zero actual police patrolling.

Therein lies the problem.

No the problem is we have the technology to monitor and fine speeders but we do not.

No the problem is municipalities trying to speed-camera their way to safety. If you want safety, you need human law enforcement. But that’s apparently racist so we can’t do that.

Look at DC. The city increases the number of speed/red light/stop sign cameras on an annual basis, but the number of pedestrian deaths is constant year over year. The cameras do nothing.

+1. Part of that human enforcement is that we need education campaigns about how to safely cross the street, and police should stop people who are jaywalking carelessly (not to necessarily ticket them, but to educate them). Also, crosswalks that are on high-speed roads but not at traffic lights should be eliminated, or if a mid-block crosswalk is really necessary, a traffic light should be installed specifically for it.

Because there's no businesses or churches on those blocks. Heck, most of the houses there don't even face University and the side streets don't cross over it.

Sorry maybe I’m confused. Are you saying University doesn’t have or need cameras because there are no businesses or churches? Like the 7-11 a kid got killed trying to get to? There’s also a bank, a vet, and a church on University. Plus kids crossing to get to Einstein. South Kensington also has pedestrian activated crossings and regular traffic lights to stop traffic allowing pedestrians to cross. University Blvd has none of that for approximately 3/4 of a mile.

Both Einstein and the 7-11/Bank are different intersections. All the intersections you are talking about have streets that cross University and are commercial areas. That stretch has neither.

It was a horrible tragedy and my deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the family but that is not an intersection that needs a traffic light and none of the comparable stretches of either University or Connecticut have one.

What that stretch needs is better lighting not another traffic light in a location without a cross street.

*University/Connecticut

For those that don't know the area, Connecticut splits just after Kensington proper. One branch goes to Aspen Hill while the other becomes University and goes to Wheaton.

It's a school area. There should be no f-ing back and forth about what needs to be done for this area. Get it done, Montgomery County

It feel like we are talking about different areas. Because they DO have signalized crossings in south Kensington and none of the commercial areas that University does. Do they have a park at those lights? A high school? Both areas should have controlled crossings. And someone shouldn’t have to die to get them.

University Blvd. has no signalized pedestrian crossing for over 3/4 of a mile. People trying to cross anytime, let alone at night, literally risk their lives. I tried it once near the CVS and never again. It doesn’t matter that 7-11 and Einstein are at different intersections, they have crosswalks and people want to cross there. They should be able to do it safely.

There is still plenty of Kensington after the split.

St. Paul is the crossing for Kensington Heights Park.

St. Paul is a crossing for many kids to go to Einstein High School.

St. Paul is the closest crossing to the East of the 7-11. Einstein kids living south of University all live east of St. Paul so it’s the nearest crossing en route.

St. Paul is the crossing for many to get to the public bus stops there on both sides of University.

Screw you. It's YOUR responsibility as the operator of the two ton murder machine to safely operate said murder machine around pedestrians and cyclists. Driver who strike pedestrians should go to prison every time.

This strikes me as a very third-world solution. But it might be useful if pedestrians were aware of it. I have never seen this before.

This is the most idiotic take from this board in years and knowing DCUM that's saying a lot. Suggesting pedestrians waive a flag as they cross the street is a laughable "solution" for protecting them from dangerous operators of two ton murder machines. THEY aren't surrounded by two tons of steel. Heaven forbid we require operators of said two ton murder machines actually operate them safely around vulnerable road users.

You are a revolting pile of human waste.
