It sounds like the beach is not for YOU.

We love Rehoboth. It’s less than 3 hours drive. We usually eat out once a day and at home/or picnic twice a day.
Our bar is low for food though. We go to seafood places but the kids also like pizza, tenders etc, which we allow, it’s their vacation too. We don’t get fast food on vacation.

FYI - if your kids are eating tenders in a beach restaurant, they are the same as tenders at a "fast food" restaurant - straight from the freezer. I say this with no judgment, but pointing out that you seem a little judgey in your statement.

I spit my drink out laughing when I read the silly statement, “We don’t get fast food on vacation” in the same line about chicken tenders.

FTR, chicken tenders in the south of France are similarly fast food.

Also, in Ocean City, you can go paddle boarding, kayaking, rent a wave runner, boating, putt putt, bike riding, etc… the boardwalk is something you do once.

We used to have a favorite ethnic restaurant in OCMD! Used to meaning it's still there- mediterranean food. But sadly we haven't made it up to the beach now that our kids are grown.

OK, but there’s a ton of good restaurants there. If you’re staying in Bethany, you’re driving down to Ocean City to eat.

Or … there are lesser places to eat there.

Depending on what she’s trying to say

Just do 2 nights/3 days at whatever Delaware or Maryland Beach you pick, get somewhere with a fridge and do sandwiches or pre-made salads for some meals. And research restaurants a bit more before you go.

We like Fenwick Island and the North end of Ocean City because the beaches are less crowded but there are restaurants and go kart and mini golf places.

Sigh. Here we go again. It's rarely less than 3 hours from anywhere in the DMV worth living, especially not in the summer unless you leave and return at odd hours. And it's not that great of a beach either. And the food is just ok -- and overpriced.

This whining makes me laugh. I've been going to Rehoboth my entire life and I remember when the drive took *much* longer with toll collection at the toll booths at the bridge (and less developed highways and infrastructure, etc). It improved when EZ pass came along at the bridge, then even better when they got rid of the toll booths entirely. The delays at the bridge when I was a kid were brutal. Also the food/restaurant scene in Rehoboth has evolved dramatically for the better over the decades.

Anyway, it rarely takes me longer than 3 hrs. Mostly 2:30-2:45 (and faster in the off season). I go there year-round (family house). Yes, it makes sense to avoid the true peak times, but going at "odd hours" is not required.

"from anywhere in the DMV worth living" - you sound insufferable.

To us, any beach trips with 1-2 days max on beach is enough, and we like to do add on & go explore somewhere (no national park, no history tours and no hiking) like aquarium/theme park/interactive museums/cruise/boat tours etc. We are not a big fan of beach food.

No history tours in Williamsburg? Then why go there?

Busch Gardens/Water Country/VA Beach Aquarium are going to be your best options for the non-beach activities (but near a beach) that you are looking for. You may just have to put up with the sand at Virginia Beach. I don't understand why you think it's boring there. It's a beach - you are supposed to play in the water and sand and read a book. You can do that at any beach.

Some people just aren't beach people. Like my MIL. She just kept asking "so what are we going to do?" while we are all hanging out on the beach. I said, "you're looking at it. this is what we do. it's the whole point." She usually takes a long beach walk and then declares she's going back to the rental house. She cannot just sit there and enjoy herself.

There was nothing wrong with saying, "There is less places to eat there!"

We love Cape Cod and the food is amazing. No boardwalk but that is the best part IMO!

Then stop going to the beach. You’ve answered your own question.

You don’t like beaches or beach food. Why go? There are lots of other great vacations driving distance from dc
