There are several DMV schools in the second set, schools that have sent at least 10 students to Harvard since 2009. |
Three from Maret go Frogs (cue the Maret haters) |
I was being sarcastic. There are more legacies in public schools than private. |
There are more kids in public schools (about 85 percent of the population) so that’s not surprising. However proportionately, given the correlation between wealth and admissions to elite schools, I would bet that legacies to elite schools make up a far higher share of the Big 3 population than they do at public high schools. |
But we were talking about raw numbers of matriculants. Why do DC area public schools, with lots of legacies and upper class families, not have more students attending Harvard? |
Public schools in the richer suburbs are filled with donut hole families -- they can't easily pay full price (that's why they are in public school for K12) but aren't eligible for aid at schools that don't give merit money. |
LOL no, they should have more money saved up for college from not paying nearly $1M in private school tuition. |
You mean like the Thomas Jefferson magnet which is one of the top schools in the country in terms of admissions to Harvard? Many public high schools are large and diverse and on occasion their students do get into Harvard but the concentration of legacies and wealthy donor admits isn’t there as it is with the private schools. |
TJ also has how many times more students in its graduating class? |
What are you talking about? “Of all schools that have sent students to Harvard, one in 11 students has come from just 21 high schools across the United States." From the DMV area, only the Thomas Jefferson magnet is among the 21 top schools. Sorry Sidwell, GDS and Cathedral schools. Sometimes merit beats out money. |
Some kids do not apply to Ivies despite being able to be admitted. |
GDS is not listed as a top Harvard feeder. Deerfield is, with 69 matriculants in 15 years. No school in the DMV is listed other than TJ. |
Wow. You people are nuts. |
Doesn’t TJ have like 500 students per grade? Of course a top magnet with that many students will send more kids to elite colleges than schools with 80-150 students. |
Stop with the sour grapes. If no one in the graduating class at GDS applied to Harvard, I’ll eat my hat. That said, the data someone posted upthread from the Harvard Crimson that shows that GDS had had at least one kid admitted since 2009 is impressive. |
