Sydney Sweeney / American Eagle Controversy

I remember a few years ago AE's swimsuit line made headlines for using "real" non-airbrushed models, with cellulite, imperfect bikini lines, etc. who looked like regular gals you'd see on any beach. SS's look and appeal is... not that.

Something has shifted in the past couple of years where you don’t use super sexed up women to sell things to women and vice versa to sell things to men. Victoria’s Secret is dying out for a couple of reasons but a big one is that “men think this is attractive, buy this” is less effective than just marketing straight to women’s everyday needs like Aerie. People like to say “go woke, go broke” for the body positivity campaigns, but it was extremely successful and pulled a lot of people over from Victoria’s Secret.

If it was just a print ad, it would be different. But her lecturing us in her fake “country” accent about genetics and eye color and such put it over the edge.

Even if models are super sexed up, successful brands often use a wide range of skin tones and body types that are sexy. See Skims, for example.

American Eagle's stock rose 20% with this ad, so apparently investors and the people who are concerned about this ad are two different people.

I don't think anybody is paying much attention to Sydney's hair color or eye color. She has "good genes" because she has a great body. She is basically Megan Fox in her heyday (and she's not blonde or blue-eyed).

And it's now dipping...

We'll see how this translates into actual sales.

I was just about to say the same thing.

The only thing I can think is that this is a push to boost men’s clothing sales or they have an impending rebrand.

I think this ad is a bit tone deaf, but not actually offensive. They could easily just add a couple more pairs of jeans/spokespeople and defuse all of this, so they may go that route.

But people don’t necessarily want that. A lot of people are tired of every add featuring an interracial couple.

Who cares what race she is? She’s objectively hot.

I always figured this was marketing trying to reach a broad audience. I personally don’t even notice it.

None of the people who care about this would actually buy AE jeans so no need to waste money.

I’ve never noticed it at all! Is this really a thing?
