While yes, there are a lot of rich snobs on this site, I am not rich. When I get the chance to go out, I do expect some basic good service and that includes periodically checking my drink. The service nowadays isn’t good-servers act like customers asking for something is an “extra” and they’re put out by having to do something that’s a normal part of their jobs. If you don’t like it, find a different job.

You can ask or just refill - and it's no one's business to tell me to drink less soda/iced tea/water. I won't blame you if the kitchen messed up, but will decrease the tip by quite a bit if you leave my drinks empty. I don't consider tips mandatory, they are for good service. In case anyone wants to make a "can't afford a tip, don't go out to eat" comment - I can afford to eat at any restaurant in the DMV and am a fairly generous tipper when it's warranted

You must be a boomer or older GenX and probably overweight.

Yes, it's cheesy, provincial, and just plain weird.

Also our tripping culture is just ridiculous.

OMG, thank you! I loved that thread. "Water doesn't really quench my thirst."

I’ll go to my grave defending her. It’s well known that fine dining pairs wine and food for a reason - the acidity and tannins of the wine make the food taste better. So wanting lemon water or a flavored seltzer or soda is totally sensible.

OP sounds like white trash who thinks they're not. Threatening to hold back tips because of a glass that's not instantly refilled is such a cheesy power trip.

Lazy entitled server got triggered.

NOPE. I don't want people to top off my drinks without asking. Huge waste. they can ask me if I want more, but absolutely don't just add to my drink. ESPECIALLY NOT COFFEE.

It's not 1985 at Friday's, OP.

Madam, I do my job well. Today during my lunch shift I provided 7 diet coke refills to a gentleman who was very thirsty. Plus provided one to go. Because this is a slow time that was easily done. Of course good servers strive to provide excellent service, including drink refills!

My point is if you drink your beverage at such an excessively quick rate, and I happen to be busy, you may have to wait a moment.

I do like it, and I'm very good at it. But thank you for the advice.
