You aren't desperate enough to feed your kid school lunch yet.

Our schools are still free lunch for every student. They didn’t eliminate it after Covid so she should see if there’s still any kind of program still available. Her kids can have the hot lunch and eat at home for. Breakfast and dinner.

Food assistance will be incredibly helpful. It’s an easy application. Just answer every question and they will let you know.

Once qualifies for SNAP her kids will be categorically eligible for free meals at school. She will also be categorically eligible for free summer meals - the money will be added to her EBT card. She will also likely be eligible for LIHEAP which is energy assistance, however that program has limited funding so she may not actually get the help depending on how the State is managing the funds.

Apply for SNAP with Fairfax County and the rest will cascade from there. And use the programs, that is what they are for. It is much easier for your family to recover financially if you do not have to hit absolute bottom. When you are back on your feet, you will pay taxes back into the system to help the next family.

She has savings.

It doesn’t matter, they don’t look at assets if there are dependents in some places.

OP, apply for everything. Go to the pantries, get all the things. Good luck!

Apply for the help, keep up with job applications but see if you can pick up gig work in the meantime. Maybe you can do rover, task rabbit, naborforce, anything short term while you look for longer term employment.

FCPS has a summer good program open to all kids (not income dependent). Some of the sites stop this week, but others are open through August. See this website for locations and menus. https://www.fcps.edu/services/families-and-caregivers/food-and-nutrition/summer-meal-service-program

OP, or anyone who finds themselves in need, go to
https://commonhelp.virginia.gov/
And apply online from the comfort of your home.
Everything is going to be ok.

Actually OP qualifies for a lot. Stay mad.

And OP should apply. Our taxes go into these services for when we may need them. You're not a hero for never needing them - you're simply lucky.

OP is worth over 400k, so she is lucky as well. She can apply for whatever programs she wants, but it's hard to believe that these programs were intended for people like OP.

Half of that is in her housing. Her mortgage is cheaper than renting. That wouldn’t make sense. She still has to live somewhere.

Yes they were made for people who find themselves unemployed and are hoping to get back on their feet as soon as possible.

+1
Giving free meals to someone with over 200k seems like a waste of taxpayers money. How about a million dollars? Where does it end?

She paid her taxes. It is her money to collect when she loses her job. Op, talk to the school and ask about free/reduced lunch paperwork. Also apply for SNAP and every other benefit possible.
