Wrong wrong wrong. I know 2 kids who turned down Cornell for NU and one who had the stats for HYP who chose to ED at Duke.

I have one at Northwestern and one at Cornell. Similar students. Very very happy at both.

Both sets of kids’ friends would have loved to have gotten into Duke (many friends ED to Duke but didn’t get in).

For some reason, Duke sits a bit higher in these kids minds. I don’t see it!

It's because of DMV. I moved to MoCo in middle school and at that point, I started hearing about Duke all the time. It's regional influence.

Duke is behind HYP and Stanford but that’s it(excluding MIT and CalTech). Duke is unique with great academics, fantastic campus, top shelf sports and one of the wealthiest alumni networks in the country.

Northwestern has all of these qualities as well minus the Duke D-bag factor (as was illustrated so well in White Lotus by Patrick Schwartzenegar’s character Saxon).

Both are ranked very high by US News but Duke has been ranked high for much longer. So Duke has more of a wow factor for older people.

My spouse and I both turned down Ivies for NU. (Dartmouth and Cornell).

Northwestern doesn’t have the appeal of Duke. Also major sports advantage for the Duke Blue Devils, has Northwestern ever been to a Final Four. Weather advantage clearly to Duke and the Duke campus is clearly superior. Northwestern and Vanderbilt would be peers.
