Downtown was insane tonight

The thing that infuriated was that the cops didn’t do anything. They just waited until someone got hurt or a fire was started and then called in the fire department. Wtf. It was definitely dangerous and they wouldn’t do anything. Were they told to stand down?

It definitely sounded like a war zone. I heard some very loud booms ( sounded like mortars) and I never saw a firework emerge.

Considering two cops were tried and convicted of homicide for chasing kids on motorbikes who ran out into the street and got hit by a car…..I am sure that no cops will be trying to chase down kids on motorbikes. They aren’t supposed to pursue them.

Why would they do anything? They have been taught that interfering with a certain segment of society brings nothing but trouble and misery.

Yeah, that struck me too. If you asked anyone where they were going and they said "downtown DC", you'd just give them a blank stare because that is a meaningless statement.

I grew up in Cleveland Park and I think of "downtown" as that boring business district south of Dupont, north of the White House. Like K street but not the Georgetown part of it. The area south of Tabard Inn. 16th st south of the circle in intersects, etc. That boring area.

The Mall is the Mall, not downtown.

Gotta love the rearranging of the deck chairs while the ship is sinking mentally. So DCUM.

We’ve said “downtown” for decades. Are you new here?

People who live in DC don't refer to "downtown." Because there is no agreed-upon part of the city that is considered downtown. It's just not language that people use. People in the suburbs sometimes refer to anywhere in DC as downtown, because they are clueless. I assume you are part of the latter group

I have never heard anyone refer to it as “downtown”. I always hear “DC” or the exact neighborhood.

People in the suburbs call it “dc”, the “district” or whatever neighborhood. OP is either trolling or talking about another city.

As I noted, third generation Washingtonian. Meaning, we have all lived in DC. For a very long time.

That's exactly right. When DC prosecutors and judges chose to charge, convict, and sentence police officers to jail for homicide after giving chase to a notorious felon and drug dealer who slammed his scooter into a parked vehicle, well, that was the end of any policing for the bike gangs. It's not even a racial thing. I saw a group of thirty or so white boys on motorcycles and e-bikes doing the same aggressive garbage not two blocks from the White House today.

No police officer is risking jail time to do anything about it. But this is what people voted for in DC. Prosecute police, not criminals. So that's why things are the way they are in DC. Prosecutors and judges have made DC a very crime friendly city for youth. DC police are checked out.

Anonymous wrote:I volunteered downtown tonight, and when we left, it was nuts. Teenagers running in the streets, cutting off cars. One kid got hit and bounced off a car and continued to run around. Shooting fireworks at people. The cops were going every which way and the fireworks were all around. It sounded like a war zone. Our supervisor asked us to walk to the metro together. We were nervous. I have lived here 20 years and rarely seen people act like this. I am also disappointed that the news didn't really report it on its own. I see the shooting story that happened right outside our building.

Ahhh, reminds me of the good ol’ days. Seriously, I remember times like that in old DC going to the bars and clubs. People have gotten soft.

Downtown means K St. Are YOU new here?

NP. Ummm, no, it isn’t just K St. unless maybe you already live downtown. Been here nearly 35 years.

DP. You don’t get out of your bubble much, do you? Downtown is used and it’s generic like the district though usually a vague term for any of the busy business/tourist areas not like near the National Shrine in NE.
