Rising senior parents - don't do ED

Anonymous
I think ED is for kids on the cusp who really want a particular school and can afford it. If you’re high stats not sure why you’d lock yourself in.

He/we got psyched out by all the chatter about kids getting screwed, and became fixed on doing ED at Chicago. Fast-forward, all his friends with similar profiles got into excellent schools- not everyone got into an Ivy, but I can only think of one kid who got "screwed" (and maybe he'll get off a waitlist in the next 6 weeks, who knows). DC should have held out instead of compromising with ED! Wish I'd tried harder to talk him out of it. Chicago is obviously not a terrible school, but the quarter system sucks, it's in a horrible neighborhood, and it's stressful. I feel certain he would have had East Coast options if he'd waited. So, rising senior parent, learn the lesson from us.

Your son’s IQ is perhaps more than you , hence this choice. Imagine going to easy peezy UPenn/Brown/ Columbia etc…

I blame the college counselor industry.

It’s in their best interest to land kids in college- so they don’t have them take any “risks”. It’s not good for business and they don’t want unhappy customers. They sell them on other schools they will likely get in and tout as “fantastic”.

Our kid had no clear front runner. No school he absolutely loved by the Nov 1 app deadlines. So he didn’t ED. We saw him completely change his mind by May. RD was very successful. It was also fun going on different admitted days and having choice.

^ oh and one deferral/WL or rejection ED abd the counselor says oh you need to ED2….nope same desperation.

Hard disagree. Not doing early decision cost my new graduate who ended up getting waitlisted. Given her stats she would have been an easy admit if applying early.

Erm, Hyde Park is not a “crappy area”. Have you even been to Chicago?

Bingo.

Quarter system is fun actually.
Chicago is better than any east coast city.
If your kid is happy, don’t rain on his parade.

Quarter system sucks for jobs/internships

That can be true depending on the rest of your “field” from your HS.

Mine was deferred from T20 in ED, wrote an insane LOCI update (paid help) and got into T20 in RD. Also, got into 2 other T20 in RD.

Not really. Stanford, Dartmouth, Northwestern kids seem to do ok.

Pros and cons to quarter system, but like all things on here someone’s opinion is posted as if it is gospel for all.

Def dont ED2 with a ED1 deferral or WL.

Rejection might be a different sign. Depends on if your kid gets a lot of merit from safeties in December. If so, I would not ED2 bc the application is being received well but your ED1 may not have been competitive.

After a T20 ED1 rejection, you must do a thorough app review to find the weak link and fix it before submitting RD apps.
