That is true but the longest stretch should not be at the end of the year. This is an ideal calendar although January-March is long. https://content.myconnectsuite.com/api/documents/fae640107bb948e59c1ffc043c580e4e Unfortunately Maryland law doesn't allow this. |

January 4-March 19, 2027-11 weeks
March 30-June 16 through 23-11.5 to 12.5 weeks January 4-March 25, 2027-12 weeks April 5-June 16 though 23-10.5 to 11.5 weeks ---------------- Both have 2 long double digit week stretches on either side of spring break but the earliest spring break could leave the longest stretch without a 4+ day weekend to the end of the year when people are checking out mentally. |
I am 52 and went to MCPS for elementary school and we always had Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur off. |
| If it's not a fasting holiday, keep schools open. Isn't Diwali a holiday for the evening? If it is, why are schools closed? Does MCPS have a large student and staff population that celebrate? Maybe in Loudoun county VA there are, but in Montgomery county?? |
Sure! And then MCPS can stay open for Rosh Hashanah, Good Friday, Easter Monday, and Christmas because they're all not "fasting holidays." |
| The state law around Good Friday/Easter Monday is ridiculous. Let school districts choose what to do. But in the meantime stop complaining about the inconvenience of observing other holidays since Xmas, Good Friday and Easter Monday are literally written into state law. |
Remove the closures after the 1st and 3rd quarters to offset these extra days off. Those closures are not for observances or breaks and are not required closures. |
It may shock you, but laws are able to be changed... |
Those are for grading and report cards |
I have this memory around 2019 mcps putting out a survey about holidays and if staff or your student would be absent on Jewish High Holidays/Diwali/Eud/Lunar New Year. I think that informed the calendar. I guess a critical number of parents/staff influenced that decision. |
I know make those each 2 half days so winter break is a full 2 weeks OR the year ends sooner. Same amount of time for teachers to grade but 2 extra days are gotten in for Maryland law requirements. |
+1! I don't care about Christmas, it's the most boring day of the year - a jew |
Sure why not. X-mas is over "winter" break. And usually "spring" break is during week of Good Friday into Easter, but they could schedule spring break same time each spring and those that need tme off around Easter can be off (for religious reasons --excused absence. Instead they could give off a week at the end of the three quarters. |
I think December 24 is the most boring since there is hardly any sports on that day. |
|
There are only 180 days of school
Which means there are frequent days off and breaks. Squabbling over not giving one religious holiday but should give another religious holiday is just a bad look. Seriously, the number of school days remains constant year to year. |
