If your babysitter screws up, you could have a dead child. The stakes are so much higher. I can only assume it's because lawnmowing is "men's work" and childminding is "women's work."

+1,000,000 - Someone pls explain this.

Ok, I will explain it:

There are a lot more people (male or female) willing to spend a couple of hours sitting next to a kid who is playing on a screen, than are willing to do the dirty and tiring job of mowing grass -- especially when it is like 90 degrees out. Additionally, mowing requires equipment.

This. Babysitting can be fun. Lawn mowing never is.

I can’t imagine paying a kid/teen more than that.

You don’t, they don’t have to drive over with a crew they pay or equipment. The teen walks or bikes over, uses your mower, and is gone in 30 mins.

How much money makes it worth their while?

All these questions, I would turn the logic around. And you after add more, because you want them to think they are getting very lucky to be making this much. That's the only way to keep them coming back, consistently.

You don't want them to do the job once, and then no longer have any enthusiasm and no longer show up.
