Having to share maternity/recovery room in hospital?

Anonymous
I'm not rich, and a good amount of women where I had my babies had Medicaid. All private rooms-for at least 25 years now.

Medium sized city in the northeast.

Are there any local hospitals that have shared rooms in 2025? None of the dc ones I know ( gw, medstar, georgetown, sibley) do

They do for the illegal alien moms.

What are you talking about

Illegal alien women in labor cannot, by law, be turned away from a hospital.

However, illegal aliens do not have insurance, don’t qualify for Medicare, and they do not have the $40,000 to pay the hospital back for the delivery costs.

Essentially: society provides these women free medical care. It’s only fair to make them at least share a room, since the hospital has to eat all the other delivery costs.

Yet this doesn't happen locally and most people on Medicare are 65+, not making babies...

Are you joking? The DMV is among the top 5 destination areas for illegal aliens entering the U.S. over our southern border.

Illegal aliens give birth in our area all the time and each one of them receives $40,000 in medical / delivery services, but pay ZERO.

Shared rooms don't happen locally and you still don't know what Medicare is. I'm sorry immigrants receiving healthcare is so upsetting to you.

Question for you:

- does someone have to fund / pay for Medicare? Or is it somehow, magically, just “free money” ?

Yes our tax dollars happily fund health care for the elderly... do you still not know the difference between Medicare and medicaid? And what does this have to do with shared postpartum rooms? Frankly find that way more horrifying than people having health care during l& d given how easy it is to die during labor without qualified medical care

This is an expectant mom’s thread; you are the one making up straw men to dodge the issue:

- women illegally sneak into our country over the southern border; they are entitled to $40,000 in delivery care for every child they have (plus they are entitled to WIC). You actually pay the $40,000 btw.

Are they entitled to a private, free recovery room too?

Huh this thread is about private recovery rooms, not your judgmental opinion about undocumented immigrants.

I had to share and I hated it. The first time somebody brought a special needs kid who was screaming. The roommate had twins and was being discharged, so I had to listen to shuffling sounds and random consultations for three patients for a couple hours as they packed instead of getting to sleep. 2nd baby was covid, only had a mom and baby roommate, that was ok. Third time, I swear to god I was wheeled in at 2am after a c-sec, I woke up the occupants so the husband (sperm donor?) started playing video games next to my head, literally feet away with only a curtain separating us. I left AMA 24 hours later and I swear to god (again) when I left the man was brushing his teeth with an electronic toothbrush. I had PTSD from the sound of a heavy industrial door closing, this man went into the bathroom SOOOOO many times, ignoring the sign on the door saying it was for patients. In the middle of the day I had just fallen asleep and a phone went off next to my head. It was dietary for the roommate. It is basically torture.

I don't understand your post but agree sharing space in the most vulnerable and exhausting moment sounds awful

A special needs newborn? What's wrong with electric toothbrush? Where were spouses supposed to use the bathroom? I can't even picture this- my spouse and I were alone in our room and never left other than my husband filling water cup

A sibling of the baby
An electric toothbrush at 2am is ridiculous
There are visitor bathrooms elsewhere in the hospital. The bathrooms in the room are for patients. Absolutely absurd that a woman who just gave birth is being made to wait to use a restroom for a male visitor!!!!!!
The husband left because his wife had placental abruption (i.e. no warning) and he had to arrange childcare for the elder sibling

Anonymous wrote:No, it is not common IME. I have 5 kids, born in different states and I've never had to share a room or pay extra for a private room. However, when we toured a hospital in LA you had to pay and reserve in advance for a private room at that hospital, we switched providers.

In very big cities it's common.

Hospitals in Toronto are overfull to the point I have heard even female OBs who work at the hospital may not be able to pull strings to get a private. They have to reserve private rooms for women with infections and any left over there is a fight for

forgot to add, the baby was in the nicu so his wife didn't even need help for the baby and I'm sure he was keeping her awake too
