Uncanny after braces?

ALWAYS tell the orthodontist you want to be there when the braces come off and you want to discuss the shaving. They all do it without discussion, and it often takes away the character.

wtf?,

Shaving teeth down?! I have never heard of that!

It’s a thing! I was horrified when I found out!

Shaving/filing. Yes.

I had this on my mental radar to discuss with the ortho. My kid had braces for three years. When they got them off last month I heard the sound and (internally) freaked out. Luckily it wasn't severe and his teeth are still uneven and he retains his character. But seriously. They all do it.

It’s the palate expanders. Every braces-wearing Gen Alpha kid got a palate expander, sometimes for years, which creates a Wallace & Gromit smile (Google it). Orthodontists push kids palates so far out that they all have this same weird cartoon smile when the braces come off.

Omg it’s exactly that!

I had no clue! I won’t let them file my kid’s teeth!

Nope, not mine. There are still some reputable orthodontists left who don’t push this two-phase plan. Just wait til they’re teens.

Did the braces and extractions necessatate the surgery?

No, the braces came first to fix her crooked teeth, but they could no longer address her jaw issues with the herbst appliance since the plates were closed (I think that was the term- she stopped growing basically).

We waited until 15 for Invisalign for my oldest and his teeth and smile didn’t change—other than the teeth were straight. He’s 19 now and of course never wears his retainers at night so they have slightly shifted.

I got Invisalign at 50 and I liked my smile better before when I had a slight overlap in my front teeth. I had more character and like the way my lip was over them. Now in pictures I feel like my top lip is up too high when I smile. Nobody in my family notices anything different though.

NP. This is the answer. Perfect teeth are due to good nutrition. That has other effects on the face. When you have an unattractive kid who is chubby with bad skin and poor bone structure, it’s obvious that they had braces to get perfect teeth. On other people, the same teeth would blend in and look fine.

It's like there are too many teeth showing. It's hard to explain. Simply look at before and after pictures of kids and you'll notice it. The smiles look unnatural.

I know what you are talking about. I think maybe it’s the result of the very popular “two phrase” braces some orthodontists love that often involve palette expanders and/or change the shape of the smile.

With phase one being on very young kids and/or putting braces on kids too soon in general, before their face is full size

Lol, this is not true. Crooked teeth have nothing to do with nutrition. It's genetics and luck.

Now how your teeth are can be very related to nutrition. But no, bad nutrition won't cause and overbite or overlapping teeth, and good nutrition won't prevent it.
