What should I serve at my book club?

Anonymous
It might just be my crowd but there's almost always a couple vegetarians and some dairy-free people at my get togethers. They'd have trouble here.

I love the pp idea of gazpacho shooters!
Your meat balls sound good.
Personally I also love a veggie tray since it's hard to resist snacking but I don't really need calories between meals.

I would skip the bone broth shooters. Also, how do you make a Frito bowl?

Nuts, crackers, some decent cheeses, veggies with dip, small sandwiches, variety of good cookies. You can get these from a good market or deli; doesn't have to be Costco stuff. Or charcuterie board as someone else suggested with stuff for vegetarians too.

+1
I really enjoy grilled olives, grilled artichokes and a sundried tomato spread or something like that, served with crostini. That could easily be part of the board.

Yes - this and some roasted red peppers, a tapenade - you can definitely add vegetarian items to a charcuterie board.

I think you pour a bag of Fritos in a bowl, then put some sort of dip next to them.

Anchovies, BONE broth (tastes gamey), lamb and goat cheese and seafood/shellfish are all very controversial.
Do you need ideas? Yes, the answer is yes, you need ideas.

Very controversial for the forum that regards salt as the devils mineral.

I love salt.
I'm allergic to fish and shellfish.
I dislike lamb and goat cheese.

I would happily eat salty bacon, chips, chinese food loaded with MSG.
So don't blame this problematic menu on salt. It's just terrible food choices by OP.

Not all people are allergic to fish and shellfish.

Seriously what a stupid reason to criticize these menu choices.

Fish and shellfish are very controversial as a menu item. Lots of people don't eat them, for a variety of reasons.

Lots of people eat nothing else, for a variety of reasons.

Definitely ditch the bone broth shooters. They seem messy and not like something I would want to eat at book club. Besides, are you just ladling broth from the saucepan into ... shot glasses? Weird!

Honestly, everything else sounds amazing to me. I'd do something simpler with the lamb meatballs ... tzatziki or hummus?

Look I'm a hippie who will eat chia seeds and bone broth on my own time, but yes this is a super weird menu for book club.

You enjoy chia seeds and bone broth alone. But you can't enjoy them with company, in the presence of a book, assuming your company shares your food interests? That doesn't make any sense.

If your book club friends enjoy something, maybe consider serving what they enjoy. This assumes you know what your friends enjoy and prefer, which is a prerequisite for hosting an event involving food.

DP

If my bone broth loving guests were down for bb, I'd present in an amuse bouche spoon. Use a turkey baster to fill the spoon, of course.

As others have mentioned, the subject matter of the book would be relevant.

Anything Bourdain: definitely, that would work.
Hunter S Thompson: yes.
Down and Out in Paris and London: sure.
Pride and Prejudice: not so much.

Grape, goat cheese, and walnut cups
Hummus - with a bit of crudités
Stuffed grape leaves - can get from market
Olives
Grapes

The meatballs sound amazing btw. But it’s a TON of food. Agree a charcuterie or grazing selection would be nice. Just a bit of a few things is plenty.

The sardines would be ok too if you know folks are into them or it’s expressly for you- I put things I love on the menu too!

I revised my menu.

Keeping the bone broth shooters, anchovies, and dip. Adding in hummus with vegetables.

The book is "The Silent Patient."

Disgusting, I would never come back.
