Yes, heard they are trying to form 2017 Silver team and have given offers to girls who did not tryout

Wait, what?! If they did not try out, how in the world did they get offers? And who would pay to be on a team of kids who may or may not have any skills!? That sounds like a disaster.

They likely registered for tryouts but didn't show up. Or, play rec league.

We got an offer from Valor two Augusts ago and never tried out. It was amusing.

Does McLean have some sort of pre-travel or skills program where some coaches have been able to observe kids and get a sense of their skills? I have a 2017 at a different club who did a "pre-travel"/skills class this spring. We did not register for tryouts because we were planning to hold off on travel for one more year. One of the coaches approached us after the last class asking if we'd be interested in joining the travel program. I presume they too are trying to fill out their lowest team. The coach made it sound like they didn't necessarily want to fill the team with just anyone, but rather with kids who at least have some sort of baseline skill level that they've able to observe.

Trust us, they will fill that last team with anyone willing to pay. There is no difference between a kid on the fourth u9 travel team and any random rec league kiddo.

It does not matter if you have a PhD in math and you set up curriculum for elementary schools, you cannot teach 3rd grade math.
Ok, got it.

This is true actually. My Dad has a PhD in physics. He could not get on my level when I needed help with algebra. He just couldn't break it down and explain it. Is he gifted in math? 100%. Could he teach lower level math? NOPE!! To him it was second nature to understand this stuff.

Wow. And there are people who take these spots?

You might be forgetting the wide range in rec if you haven't watched the younger ones in a while. Some of them just stand there or run away from the ball. Or some try but they just kick the ball wherever without any sort of thought about where it will end up. Or they have literally no touch. The average kid on a fourth U9 team may not be good but if they are signing up for travel they tend to at least be coachable with an interest in learning and improving. That is very different from the random rec kid whose parents signed them up just to keep them moving.

Except I presume at U/8 or U/9, parents are the ones pushing their kids to play travel, no? I don't know many 7 or 8 year olds begging for travel sports.

If they didn't attend try outs, they probably haven't met the coaches either, right? So odd to me.

PP who posted that a coach approached us about our 2017 after the skills class. A lot of it is the parents at this age, but in our case we have an 8 year old who has been asking for a year when they are going to play travel, because they have an older sibling who has been playing travel for a few years. We've been trying to hold off and say "we'll see". I know it's ultimately up to us as parents, but I am a little worried about sending a message to the younger DC that they aren't good enough to do something that we let their older sibling do. And now we can't say "oh, there aren't any spots" because DC was right there listening when the coach approached us.

7 or 8 year olds with older siblings definitely do.
